Here are pictures from my visit to The Harz, what an absolutly stunning line it is, the best bit is the climb upto the Brocken summit, 16 odd miles of continuios climbing at 1in 30. Its also hard to belive that steam is a regular timetabled service on that network, running through streets and also peoples front windows also the snow and ice was impressive at Brocken station.
    Here you are.......

you have to remember the Harz moutains are quite high up.

My first journey up the Brocken I retreated to the coach on arrival at the summit to escape the snow and cold - It had been a nice day at the base.

Not helped by the fact that the cafe at the summit didn't open until after the train departed.

Excellent pictures.I have been to the Harz on a couple of occasions in May and June time and even then there can still be snow at the top but I have never dared venture there in winter.Well done.Incidentally you may get a wider audience for your photos if you put them in the International section, they deserve to be seen by more people.

Yes, winter on the Brocken can be interesting to say the least. Glad you enjoyed it. When I was last there the line above Schierke was closed for four days while they cleared the snow up to the summit. The first train up on the day the line reopened was packed to say the least. we joined it at Drei Annen Hohne and we had to ride on the open balcony. A somewhat chilly experience shall we say. Pictures at the top were worth it though.

Looks like you had the same good weather we did! Got there late on the Monday and it was full gloom, Tuesday we awoke to a few inches of snow over Wernigerode and Wednesday was super extra sunny! What hotel did you stay in to get th shot of the smoke over the town?

So, is there an easy way to get there - or is it a difficult spot to find by air/rail? A few pointers would be great :)

    No its an easy journey.

Plane to Hanover or Berlin then train to Wernigrode takes about 3 hours with a few changes - but the DB website will do it all for you - even tells you which platform the train will be on.

Search for Harz on here as there have been several threads about how to get there andwhere to stay - and/or PM and I'll give you a few tips and hints.

    Well worth it.

Harz is a fantastic line.. several locomotives in steam each day, and occasionally freight as well at the southern end.

There's also a morning train from Nordhausen all the way to Wernigerode, which gives enough time to climb Brocken.

At the extreme end of the system is Gerode at Alexisbad, not quite as interesting as the mountains, but still some lovely countryside.

Everyone should make at least one trip to the Harz in their life time !

Not being pedantic but it's Gernrode and the line now goes beyond there to Quedlingburg.
I agree 100% with your closing statement. It's a fabulous system.
