I regret that it's some 4 years since posting anything about the preserved St Albans South Signal box on this Forum, due to family and my own ill-health in recent years.

Anyway, come and visit our 1892 Midland Railway signal box - currently the largest preserved MR box and one of the few boxes of any company preserved where it originally stood, next to a still busy main line.

SUNDAYS 2-5pm - except where stated
    Jan 8th
(Please note there is no extended opening in January following the Chiltern Model Railway Association's annual show being moved to Stevenage in 2017 - it takes place on the 14th/15th January at the Leisure Centre there. Also note that the 'Enjoy St Albans!' weekend has been subsumed into 'The Big Weekend, organised by the English Tourist Board in April)
    Feb 12th
    March 12th
April Sat 1st/Sun 2nd. Extended opening 10am-5pm both days for "The Big Weekend" organised by the English Tourist Board.
    April 9th - back to 2-5pm
    April 23rd
    May 14th & 28th
    June 11th & 25th
    July 9th & 23rd
    August 13th & 22nd
September 9th (Saturday) and 10th (Sunday): 10am-5pm - extended opening for Heritage Open Days
    September 24th - back to 2pm-5pm
    October 8th & 22th
    November 12th
    December 10th

FREE ENTRY - with souvenir 'Edmundson' card ticket. (Donations always welcome!)
Light refreshments available - watch the trains pass on the adjacent Midland Mainline while you enjoy your tea or coffee!

In the past four years we have added a number of new exhibits to the site:
Second Midland Railway signal in post-1910 style, worked from a ground frame
Midland Railway Telegraph 'pole route' running through the garden
Modern LED signal demonstration in addition to our 1970s colour light signals
    Garden railway
Old advertising signs and road signs on display
    Demonstration "eNtrance-eXit" signal panel
Expanded museum display on the ground floor of the box
(Until the end of August 2017) photo display of St Pancras before, during and after conversion and restoration to take the Channel Tunnel trains.

The final and best item of all - demonstrations on the 1906 Midland Railway 44 lever 'tumbler locked' frame upstairs!

See our website http://www.sigbox.co.uk for location details; also to arrange group visits on days other than the public open days listed above.
