Just to alert all Plandampfers that yesterday David Sprackland forwarded me the details for the October Plandfampf event to be held around Meiningen.

So I have just updated the UK plandampf web site at plandampf.co.uk

I'm gutted... been on this event for the last 2 years, but this year I'm starting University and it really doesn't look feasible that I can get down there... Gutted but hope everyone has a good time (With the 44 as well, I'm lead to believe?!)

    Regards,
    a jealous student named Phil...

Just got home from Germany after 5 days of sun! Some absolutely stunning shots of 44 2546, 44 1144 and 95 1027. I've got nearly 600 photos from there, as well as the Harz and the Stassfurt Sodawerk narrow gauge system near Magdeburg, to sort out over the next few days!

    Nigel,

You should be catching up on some sleep!

Best weather yet for the autumn Plandampf and all nearly went to plan. With modernisation currently underway and some organisational difficulties I would be surprised if there is another one on the line but it certainly went out with a bang. Only thing missing was some loud engines (52 or 50s!) but the filthy 44 helped make up for that.

    Cheers,

I had to put some washing in and get stuff sorted, hence still being up at silly o'clock this morning! I've downloaded one card's worth of photos, second card currently downloading now. It's going to be a big job sorting through that little lot.

Thirteenth shot down. Not as good as what we managed on the climb, but certainly pretty atmospheric.

Superb event with equally superb weather most of the time. Loads of photos and some cracking sound recordings will keep me busy on the editing front for quite a while. Good to see 5944 out there and many other familiar faces too.

    Ian,

How about Zeitz in February with two 52s or maybe next Autumn with two 44s and a 50.35. Oh well looks like I won't be going to Scotland again....

    Cheers,

    Yes Yes Yes...

Earlier this year I organised a trip with my father to Trier.. simple.. Eurostar, Hotel, Dampfspektakle ticket.. same duration. On arrival we found out we stayed at the same hotel as Rail trails..whom we bumped into every day on an almost identical itiniery.

Only difference was we did it for £400 less !

I think it is very true that you can do things cheaper yourself, but you take the risks of missed connections with flights etc if you do everything on a non-refundable basis, which tends to be the case with budget flights and booking hotels on the net. But my trips abroad on self-organised basis have, so far, worked out fine.

Having travelled into Europe several times in the past few years I can say that my budget flights have not been the cause of significant delays, however Austrian and German railways have, but in both cases there was never any trouble using a later service on the same tickets even though the original tickets were service specific. With the savings involved I am happy to take the risk.
