Locomotives of note are class 04 2284 withdrawn from Colchester three months earlier and sold to the National Coal Board for use at Woolley Colliery from where it reached preservation and class 10 shunter 3486 withdrawn eight months earlier in November 1970 from March and broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham within weeks in August 1971. The other two class 10 shunters (4072/74) would be withdrawn the following April.

So ended day six at Paddington ready for the overnight train to Plymouth.

Locomotives of note: With the decline of traditional traffic through Southampton Docks the first of the class 07 withdrawals had just taken place in May 1973 and 2988/91/93/98 were all condemned. Three of these would be broken up starting with 2988 four months later in November 1973, however 2991 still survives today. 3012/13/14/45/47 were also all condemned with 3012/13 being broken up three months later in October 1973. 3045 survived until April 1976 whilst 3047 was sold and exported to Liberia, 3014 still survives today. Hymek 7016 would survive another year in traffic being condemned in July 1974.

1973 saw the start of the withdrawal of the class 52 western fleet commencing with the three of the four remaining vacuum braked only locomotives with 1019 being condemned in May 1973 and 1018/20 being condemned in June 1973 and the first dual braked locomotive 1032 also being condemned in June 1973 (all four being on the scrap line at Laira when visited during this week in July). Of those Westerns seen on this day 1004 would survive only a few weeks (cond August 1973), 1002/07 would survive six months (cond January 1974) and 1000 would survive seven months (cond February 1974).

On This Day in History – Ratcliffe On Soar – 14th July 1972

A favourite lineside spot when I was a lad was Ratcliffe on Soar which is located just south of Ratcliffe Power Station and the relatively new East Midlands Parkway station. To get there from Clifton entailed a cycle ride along the now notorious A453, something I would not recommend today.

Class 08 (3026/29, 3404), class 20 (8006/61/63/64, 8114/38/41/43/47/48/50/52/62/76/79/88/89), class 25 (5227/32/42/44, 7500/12/16/29/87, 7602/05/18), class 27 (5375), class 31 (5805), class 44 (2/6/10), class 45 (11/17/37/62/68/76/80/91/97, 108/26), class 47 (1519/46, 1694, 1729/41/59, 1824/29)

Of note are 1519, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed three years later just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction and class 27 5375 which is a reminder that during the 1960’s half the class 27 fleet were Midland Main Line engines. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8006/07 ex London and 8114 ex Scotland.

On this day in History - North Nottinghamshire – 20th July 1969

The school holidays have just started and forty two years ago on the day that man first set foot on the moon it was out with the push bike for the forty mile plus round trip to Shirebrook calling in on the way at the old steam shed at Kirkby in Ashfield which was still being used as a stabling point.

Shirebrook MPD
Class 08 (3325), class 10 (4057/66/69), class 31 (5584, 5684/87, 5806/14/19/23/24/26/30/33/35/44), class 47 (1518/24, 1791, 1801/97/99, 1998), Brush Prototype HS4000.

Of note are 1518, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML passenger duties, what that was doing at Shirebrook, a freight depot I do not know. HS 4000 of course was the Brush Type 5 prototype Kestrel and was at this time on trial with British Rail and a Tinsley engine. It was regularly out-stationed at Shirebrook working coal trains to Whitemoor yard, March. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8010/12 ex London and 8111 ex Scotland.
