NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY LINESIDE GUIDE. V1.1
For contributions or amendments please email mailto:davidballard@Hotmail.co.uk

On the North Norfolk Railway, Most engines face 'up' (towards Holt) Therefore all of these shots use positions facing Holt, though many can be reversed

Locations that have titles written in capitals are on Railway Land, and so I recommend the purchase of a lineside pass to reach these areas.

    0) Sheringham Station
I've never taken many photos here because of the crowds, but heres one. I'm not giving directions for this one!
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 010104.JPG

    2) Sweet Briar Lane Crossing. (Formerly Golf Links)
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 160201.JPG

Parking: Nice easy one this.. after the mini roundabout head along the A149, (past Sheringham Station) take the first Right turn after the Petrol Station marked 'Sheringham Golf Club'

    3) Ascending the 1 in 49 (Two Spots)

Parking: Off of the A149 after a dip and then a rise, at the brow of this rise is a small road off to the left. Cross over the road and you will most likely see two trodden down paths.
To your Right is a classic spot
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 070403.JPG
To your left is a spot not used so commenly and on a hedgerow in the middle of a very amicable farmers field
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 271004.JPG

    4) Bridge 304
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 290803.JPG
    A simple 'on Bridge' shot

    5) Bridge 303

    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 050602.JPG

A classic location. At one time the farmer had a large 'parking area' now there is room for 2 or 3 cars if you get there in plenty of time. This sort of shot is acheivable from public areas, but railway land gives up to 5 alternatives.

    6) Sheringham direction ‘Nature Trail’
Parking: Park at Weybourne past the station and on ‘the nature trail’ heading for Sheringham, this route is very popular with walkers and cyclists. Along here are several places. The first to be encountered on your left is Weybourne Headshunt.
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 271002.JPG
Carry on for about a minute and you will reach the top of a small hill.
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 271001.JPG

A further few minutes and you arrive at an earth mound with a path encircling it. The top of this mound gives spectacular photos such as

    7) Around Weybourne Station ( Three Spots)

These spaces Comprise of The Footbridge.

The Viewing Areas at the Holt end of either station

    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 080808.JPG
    End of Either Platform
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 230810.JPG
And Sandy Hill Lane Bridge which runs over the station
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 180909.JPG

    8) Ascending the 1 in 80.
Going back out of the station onto the Nature trail in the opposite direction, walk past the over flow carpark, and cross over the road. After this is a 'nature trail' linked to a local caravan park
There are numerous places along here. One of my favorites is near the viewing holes (it will be obvious)
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 280808.JPG

On the opposite side to this is a beautiful shot, which requires a LINESIDE PASS

    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 180904.JPG

    9) Kelling Heath Park Halt
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 311208.jpg
A intermediete station. Trains from Weybourne -> Holt do not stop so it's still on the 1 in 80 and working hard.

    CUTTING LAND SIDE.
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 180905.JPG

    THIS REQUIRES A LINESIDE PASS
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 280803.JPG

    11) Cutting Curve Sea Side
The lines secondary classic point. Continue the nature trail down to windpump crossing.. cross over if you don't drown in the lakes that always seem to be there! Cross over back up the other side and the place is obvious.
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 280804.JPG
This photo has been taken with a lineside pass but a 'non pass' area is literally 3feet back from where this was taken, and still gives a very respectable photo.

    WINDPUMP CROSSING

Couple of nice shots. Just carry on down the nature trail, get to big white gates.
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 261001.JPG
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 280306.JPG

    12) End of the Straight
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 100704.JPG
Carrying on (brave person) along the quite heavily vegetated nature trail eventually you will reach the end of the long straight

    13) AVIRARES CURVE
on the curve. Easy enough… very long curve
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 180906.JPG

    14) Bridge 299
Another 'on bridge' shot - if you've got a nice driver he will have opened out a little bit here so you might get a bit of acceleration. By now you will have walked approximately 2 miles from Weybourne. If this is too much, there is a small bit of off-road parking that very quickly fills up just prior to this bridge. As you drive from Sheringham towards the town of Holt (get out the map) take the turning marked ‘Bridge Road’ – the bridge is there eventually!
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 261002.JPG

    15) LINESIDE BRIDGE 299
Several places around here. I've put photos of THREE here. All require a lineside pass
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 310502.JPG
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 260306.JPG
    http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/dav ... 261007.JPG

    16) ENTRANCE TO HOLT
    http://free.hostdepartment.com/d/davesb ... 010106.JPG
Taken from the start of the passing loop. A nice shot

    17) Holt
A couple of Shots are possible on the station platforms. Sorry, no evidence provided, I rarely get this far!

Just to re-iterate. PLEASE DO NOT TRESPASS. All places written in lower case are accessible along public footpaths to the best of my knowledge. NNR lineside passes can be purchased by contacting Sheringham Station. Please Support the Railway.

    NNR

very comprehensive photo guide. I had my first visit to the NNR last summer and found some of the locations you describe. this has certainly
filled in the gaps for this years visit.
    many thanks

its' certainly a good starting point. Its by no means comprehensive, when looking back through my old photos to make the guide, i found over 45 locations along the line, with 11 alone within the weybourne station limits!

If anyone wants more locations added i'm more than happy.. but as i'm sure you understand there are some 'obscure' locations that i enjoy that i can't possibly share. These places are viewable on my website, http://www.davesrailwayphotos.tk , but i couldn't say how to get htere - best left a secret!

I spent last week based in a cottage at Upper Sheringham, but due to a major re-build of the interior of my Land Rover Discovery, which HAD to be completed before we set off, forgot to download this guide before setting off to Norfolk. However, after day one it was clear that there were plenty of good locations for photting. Interestingly, two of my favourite spots are not listed in the guide and there is only one or two images from them on Dave's website. Naturally, bearing in mind his comments about secrecy, I won't spill the beans :-# . Virtually all of his locations were instantly recognizable. The NNR does seem to be very photogenic O:) .

We (SWMBO is as enthusiastic about steam as I am) had a great time and we will be returning, hopefully, sooner rather later!

BTW, my photography skills are not brilliant and you won't see any of my efforts published on t'internet. Sorry, but out of all my numerous digital images, there is only one that I feel is any good. The others are just a record of holiday.

    Thanks

    Help!

Going to the NNR during May for the first time and daves guide looks quite comprehensive - thanks very much for posting it -but the links don't work anymore. Horace has posted a link to the m and gn website - thanks again - but for us southern foreigners it's almost impossible to tie the photograph to the location. Can anyone help?
