(Press Release) Another good year for passenger numbers: For the first time ever, North Norfolk’s Poppy Line has carried over 150,000 people in a single year. Figures released by the railway show a rise of just under 5% to a total of 150,497 passengers.

Director of marketing Colin Borg said: "Coming on top of a 13% increase in 2010, the record result is a tribute to our volunteers who operated an intensive programme of services and special events throughout the year. It emphasises the importance of the Poppy Line to the tourist economy of North Norfolk." These figures do not include around 5,000 people who visited the railway but did not travel on a train.

By pegging fares and running more trains in the shoulder-peak months we attracted more visitors. Special events such as the ‘40s Weekend in September broke previous records.

2012 services on the Poppy Line start in the February half-term week. Fares have again been held to 2009 levels, providing excellent value (the Rover ticket allows all-day travel on any train). The programme of special events has been expanded, with Titfield Thunderbolt Live! set to be a major attraction over three days in June, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the classic Ealing comedy film and featuring the Wisbech and Upwell tram-coach. Hopefully the bar will be open all day as it was in the film!.

Sorry, not particularly relevant necessarily, however we were planning on visiting the NNR this Saturday for the Beer Festival etc and have a campsite booked (last week).
We are camping novices, but seeing recent weather forcecasts and rain around where we are over the last couple of weeks, can anyone spare two mins - if possible please - to give an honest assessment of what it is like in the Sheringham area, I've seen mixed reviews and mixed forecasts for the next few days!

    Hi matt_cov
It depends on what you are arfter if you what the Blackpool, Brighton or Gt yarmouth nightlife North Norfolk is not that sort of place for me norfolk is to unwind going to some nice pubs like The Lord Nelson at Burnham Thorpe (a must go to pub with lovley food and steeped in histery as Burnham Thorpe is where Nelson was borne and the pub has no bar) Wells Next The Sea for the fish & chips at the Quey side & the a mile long walk to the beach. Pensthorpe Waterfowl Park & Gardens (BBC Springwatch) catch the train to Norwich. In my opinion norfolk is the perfickt place to unwind.

Certainly agree on all above points ! I've been to Wells N-T Sea virtually every year for a hols or day trip every year since being born so about 30+ years - now introducing our children to the delights! in fact even saw someone that gets the same commuting train to BIrmingham as me whilst having those chips on the sea wall a couple of years ago! Last time we were there we saw them setting up the beer festival on the NNR and just thought that it may be a good excuse for a parents only weekend away! Having only managed to camp once before our first born we were just apprehnsive on the weather / being blown away! Thank you for replying!

Would there be any chance that someone from the NNR post the events for 2013 on here when they become available?

I have never visited the NNR, and want to at least make a weekend visit!

    Cheers

Cool. I'll have to see what dates the gala's are at Glos/Warwarkshire, Bluebell & Mid-Hants are before making any arrangements.

Is a 9F classed as a standard? I'd have thought Standards were 2s, 4s, 5s (although not Black 5s) and so on...

    Yes... A 9F is a Standard 9.

Standards were locomotives designed by british railways to 'standardise' the new generation of steam locomotives, there were 12 classes which were:

    2MT 2-6-2 tank engine
    2MT 2-6-0 Mogul
    3MT 2-6-2 tank engine
    3MT 2-6-0 Mogul
    4MT 2-6-4 tank engine
    4MT 2-6-0 Mogul
    4MT 4-6-0
    5MT 4-6-0
    6MT 'Clan' 4-6-2
    7MT 'Britannia' 4-6-2
8P 4-6-2 No. 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' - the only one ever built.
    9F 2-10-0

The WD Austerity 2-8-0's & 2-10-0's & 0-6-0 tanks are often connected with the standards as they were all Riddles designs.

Yes, a 9F is a Standard Class. It's designed by Riddles, has the same high running plate as all Standards and (I think) has the same or similar boiler to a Britannia
