As part of the overhaul of Bagnall 2746 The Duke the main steam pipe from the front tubeplate to the cylinder block has to be replaced. We had intended to use a copper pipe, but it seems the correct grade and size is simply not to be had, so we have decided on a steel one, to be made by Newtons of Cromford.

This involves making a template to match the old (and terminally thin) copper pipe, and then fabricating a steel pipe from formed sections to suit. We have decided to order two so that we will have one on the shelf for the future.

Would any Austerity owners like to join in to bring the cost down on a production run?

While on this subject, we have a half share in a pattern for a Hunslet Austerity chimney, which is kept at the Ribble Steam Railway who will arrange for chimneys to be cast on request.
