The NWPG is launching its latest venture..Project Petroleum.

Oil based freight has been a massive business for the railways second only to Coal. The launch of monobloc four wheel tanks in the early 1960’s started production runs which totalled many thousands and were utilised by all the big Petroleum companies. This developed to the bogie TEA tanks which became the industry standard and started the slow decline of the four wheel TTA’s.

The NWPG has owned a TEA for several years but it’s been stored awaiting a home, which, thanks to the Dean Forest, now has a home. The final run of the last TTA’s on November 15th became the catalyst for looking at Petroleum tank preservation.

Following an appeal the NWPG is delighted to announce that the Dean Forest Railway have offered a base for Project Petroleum. The Forest has a rich freight history with bitumen tanks once regularly traversing their line. But not only TTA’s but they are homing the TEA bogie tank also. With a mainline connection and Network Rail Station it represents a perfect home for visitors and volunteers to see the tanks.

The NWPG have been in discussions with the disposal contractor for the last 21 tanks. These are all still in mainline ticket and could be railed to Lydney. We have been offered an acceptable price per tank and the DFR can accommodate up to around eleven TTA’s. We are launching our latest fundraiser to see how many we can get. This is last chance to create a small rake so typical of minor yards and depot fuel points for over fifty years.

It'll be nice to have another rake of specific wagons in preservation! We've got a decent length of Dogfish, the GCR has the Windcutters, there's the MGR project. I'm sure I'm missing some, but its always good to see decent wagon rakes in one place.

    Agreed.
Is there a rake of China Clay wagons preserved anywhere ? So typical of the Cornwall and Devon lines.

The GCR also has an 18 wagon Van train and a 9 wagon Tank train as well as a decent length Ballast train. The Northampton and Lamport Rly are getting a useful Tippler train.

I just had a look at their FB page, where a final summary of the appeal has been posted, and they actually appear to have saved 8 or 9 of those tanks for preservation, so not bad going.......

however the project that myself and my father had founded created and was running that being the clay wagon project has now stopped meaning our dream of restoring the largest collection of BR china clay wagons has now ended and any work to those wagons is now being done by bodmin and wenford.

An update on this from the NWPG page on FB.

'Our empty tanks have been pencilled in for a move from Gascoigne Wood to Lydney on Tuesday 7th March.

The usual caveats apply to the move, like failed engines, wagons or paperwork issues, but we don't forsee any of this being an issue on the day.

Traction is expected to be 37418

We have many many people to thank, not limited to The Rolling Stock Library, VTG, Mike the RST guy and not least Loram!' FB_IMG_1677954762073.jpg

No information is given on what is due to be hauling the tankers.
