A sort of parallel popularity contest to the poll that's going on:

I was looking back at my YouTube channel tonight, and was surprised by the wide range in the number of views that each of my mainline tour videos got, thought I'd share the numbers with you. I posted over 50 videos during the year, and I linked to most of them here, on The Works, and on RailwayForum.

The number of views ranged from around 200 for the lowest to 1,600 at the top end.

    1. The Non-Stop Bristolian "All The Best Bits", 1,600 views: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn9qzvshdJg

    2. 60163 on the St Davids Day Cathedrals Express (video disaster!), 1,160: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZY3gC6C76s

    3. The Non-Stop Bristolian Down Train, 1,121: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8ddc0lUEUE

    4. Pannier Joy! 9600 on Centenary Steam Express, 946: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFrj6kBgak

    5. Day 1 of the Great Britain III with 5029 Nunney Castle, 938: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJLiBpVXUv4

    6. 60007 SNG on the Cathedrals Express, 929: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46qhrCObCYI

    7. 6024 King Edward I on the Cornish Riviera Down Train, 925: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L-QrnPT8s8

    8. 35028 Clan Line VSOE to Oxford, the trip when it failed, 908: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyiBandEQGw

    9. 60163 Tornado on the VSOE, got linked on the A1 Trust website, 873: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKNH1IaQdM0

    10. 6201 Lizzie on the Cathedrals Express, 840: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOvaAdn1i4E

    11. 5029 and 6024 Double Header on the Cornish Riviera Express: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08nMTfgE3x8

    12. The First Moor Street Express, 758: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_YnbkUc0fI

Amongst the lowest number of views were various other Tornado trips, several of Bittern, two trips by 71000 (surprised me!), quite a few of Sir Lamiel, lots of other Clan Line VSOE's and some Tangmere trips.

Clearly, this only reflects the trips I saw from the lineside, but I thought it was interesting anyway :)

Had a look at mine for 2010 but as I was working on board quite a lot, I only uploaded 34. Here are my top 6. Two of them are only test runs, which maybe shows the interest to see a loco that has not been around for a time, in the case of 70000, a long time.

60163 on the Royal Train, 4th February, 1503 views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGJV2vDedFg

60163 on The Border Raider, 24th June, 1271 views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziE4VS_IChM

    70000 on a test run. 9th November. 1204 views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjtclL63b9A&feature=player_embedded

Garratts in Zimbabwe, 4th August 728 views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zdcigtv8gSQ

    5043 Pride of Swindon, 16th October, 671 views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K8ZBhUcarg

    46115 on a test run, 27th April, 656 views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE-51F87IH8

I took it a bit further with my most viewed from all and this was Leander over Shap from September 2006, with 16,436. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3yo7gb2mPA

How things have changed since then, not only in the picture quality available but also the quality of editing.

Not by any means by best 10 vids of the year. Maybe we should do what we believe to be our best 10 not neccaserily what was most viewed as some of my efforts there are rather poor in comparison with my others from the year!

My most viewed of all is:

    60163 75mph test run,18/11/08. 21,159 views http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uut1Q4hQMYo

    Cheers,
    Mark

That's very strange Mark, my Tornado test run shot, same evening at Northallerton only has 6,253. How can two clips be so different, the only thing I can see is I did not put 'test run' in my description. It would seem therefore that what you title your clips can have a marked effect on the viewing figures. Lessons have been learned today.

I was thinking the same thing tbh,its a case of luck also,no way is it worth 20k of views so it is clearly something to do with the way it appears on the related vids. Although I do seem to remember that my vid was on YT within 2 hours of filming, and that it had racked up well over a thousand before I even went to bed!

I don't do mainline stuff, so my films are by no means comparable, but I too have often wondered just why it is that some of my films are very much more popular than others.

Yes you had an advantage that day, we had problems getting back through the border, they hadn't spotted us heading East earlier, we had to sit in some pub for several hours drinking some strange brew??

What a strange thing to say. :mmph: I was merely posting the comparison in popularity (ie YouTube views) between the various tours that I video'd this year. For comparison with the polls that are on this forum at the moment.

It would seem to me that your intent was not 'tongue in cheek' but to be totally offensive.

Ah the man who talks nothing but bullsh*t has returned!

As I always maintain. Constructive criticism I listen to. Rubbish like you and many others post I personally completely ignore, why people think it will make the slightest difference to me I have no idea.

If you dont have anything useful to say why bother saying it. Nobody in this thread made out to be the best photographer of them all. In fact I dont know why we bother because you are clearly MUCH superior to us all. And of course thats all that matters. Then again, some of us dont just film for ching/self viewing and actually allow others to see and criticise our works!

Maybe you can gain some more respect from "The Clique" by posting these comments. But there is one thing, this "Clique" that all the main men are in,makes absolutely no difference to me because quite a few of them are A.Too Arrogant B.Too obsessed or C.Purely Ignorant, what you fail to realise is that outside your group not everyone is bowing down at your every word.

Such as this for instance on my website,by the "wonderful" Mr Les Nixon:

    http://mark-walker.fotopic.net/p67845342.html

"From Les Nixon at 2010-10-27 14:43:11 : Some terribly under-exposed shots here! Don't you know how to use a camera?"

Whats the problem,so,my website is suddenly worse than all the others out there,or is it more than he doesnt want new up and coming photographers based on 'his patch'? You tell me,or perhaps Mr Nixon could tell me,seen as though he never had the common courtesy to reply to my comment in return which I did think about and write out fully instead of ranting like this!

    My reply was as follows:

From Mark Walker at 2010-11-16 00:08:23 : Hardly an encouraging comment from a man of your standing. Thankfully I have more positive comments from other experienced photographers, with much more useful feedback. Thankfully I have people who are willing to make constructive remarks rather than your critical ones on my own website, which I personally find more offensive rather than helpful. It is unhelpful to say "Don't you know how to use a camera?" without claryifing the reason behind it. Especially when the comment was made about a shot that was taken purely for the record. My intention for this website is to create a record for years to come. Sometimes at the expense of image quality. But then,at least I will have something to look back on in years to come, rather like yourself? One wonders if you would have made the same comments 40 years ago to someone who had been around since the pre-grouping days? I would have appreciated it much more if you would have made a constructive comment rather than a destructive one. "

I could go on and on with the snide remarks made against me,why people want to do it I will never know, maybe some think that I am too cocky, which I arent and I know people can back me up on that,I only respond in a negative manner when someone has a go at me first,I never make the first strike in an arguement because my way of thinking is to let it be. However if somebody challenges me I will gladly reply in the same manner that they post. Funnily enough I dont know any of the people who make these comments,is this because they are all too busy getting "The master shot" for the mags? Who knows, but one thing I do know is that I welcome you all to make comments on my site, because as I said,it makes no difference to me unless they are constructive,if you just post in a trollish manner like the example above.

My views on the comment Mr Nixon posted? Until he posted that he was a photographer whom I respected, mostly for his work in the local area. Now? He's just another photographer who I ignore. Sad but thats what happens when you show pure ignorance, you will more than likely will get it back.

There are more examples of pure arrogance on my website, whats the need. I dont care for the master shot etc etc. I go out,get a fot, come home put it on my site. Why should that trouble anybody, nobody is forcing people to look at my site, and if you dont like it,why not make a constructive remark informing me how to improve (because there are plenty of things for me to learn in the world of photography,I am under no illusions) my photography.

I know many of you will wonder "What is he talking about?!",tbh so am i(!) but I have sat back and just let people make snide remarks on my photography for 5 years now,now I feel with this thread is as good a time as any to ask,WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!?

No doubt those whom make the comments wont reply, you can just sit back and watch. I have those who I look up to and respect greatly in the photography world, plenty who I get inspiration off and others who I get advice off, then there are those I completely ignore, purely because they have treat me with the same level of respect.

Sorry for the rant, just something I have wanted to get off my chest, this thread been in the right place to post it.

Mr 46236,could you post your top 10 videos,or do you prefer not to post them for us mere mortals to see?

Bloody Hell, all I was originally interested by was which locos and tours got most interest in 2010 from the steamtrain-video watchers on YouTube, judged just by the viewings of the videos I put together! As there were polls going on here, this seemed to have some relevance.

It has got a bit silly now.

46236, if you're going to post anything, a similar set of results to mine, Ralph's and Alberta's would probably be most relevant, rather than a video.

I think you will find you have made snide remarks on more than one occasion. That post was not all about you. 90% wasn't related to you at all. The only part was regarding your unnecasery comment. Which you have done many times in the past. Why would you feel the need to post at all if you werent just trying to stir things up?
