No I do not currently volunteer
I visited Butterley today and it was a somewhat mixed experience. The advertising was (their website):

Midland Railway - Butterley Heritage Open Weekend
A special weekend re-creating the Works Open Days that were popular in the 1950s.
There will be a wide range of steam and diesel traction operating to an intensive timetable.
    August 28th to 30th

The reality was somewhat short of that. The haulage was a DMU (Nice but wow so slow) and a bright blue Jinty clearly a de-copyrighted "Thomas". It was nice to see the stationary pwer displays working and a few buses. Fork lift truck display is now complete but a little "specialist". There are some great facilities - PRCLT in particular and a lot of locos.

But works open day? No way. There was nothing special. Perhaps expecting access to workshops (and there are a lot of them) was too much but some of the diesels in the yard could have been started up. Societies could have had stands etc etc.

I am not sure if something went wrong or if centres are trying too hard to have an event every weekend.
