At its opening in May 1898, the legendary narrow-gauge Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in North Devon was equipped with three Manning Wardle 2-6-2 tank engines. Two months later they were joined by a Baldwin 2-4-2 and all four locomotives were named after three-letter Devon rivers. The Baldwin was named 'LYN' but was commonly referred to by the staff as 'the Yankee'. When the Southern Railway took over the line in 1923, they also gave 'LYN' a number: E (For Eastleigh - the Southern shed Pilton was attached to) 762.

Plans are now in place to build a replica of Baldwin engine No.15965. The new locomotive will look externally just like the original 'LYN', while benefitting from modern engineering techniques, such as welded tanks (with dummy rivets!), higher boiler pressure and roller bearings.

The 762 Club, although closely linked to the L&B, has been set up as a separate company to raise money, build, maintain and operate the new locomotive.

For more information - including a photo gallery - of the historic LYN, and details of how you can become involved in this fascinating project, which is rapidly gathering worldwide support, or just to keep in touch with what is going on, see the project’s own website: http://762club.com/762home.php

Since the project was launched, the first Newsletter has been published and can be viewed online at: http://762club.com/762news.php

The most recent addition is the introduction of a 762 Club "Sponsor-a-Component" Scheme. See: http://762club.com/762sponsorship.php
