The distinctive royal blue and red livery of the Longmoor Military Railway will be coming back to the tracks this year, with two locomotives expected to be outshopped in the famous colour scheme.

The Kent & East Sussex Railway has announced that ‘USA’ tank No. DS238 will emerge from its current overhaul in LMR livery. The locomotive, which has previously carried Southern Railway unlined black and BR Malachite green as ‘Wainwright’ in preservation, is expected to return to steam in the first quarter of this year.

One USATC ‘S100’ class locomotive was allocated to the military railway: LMR No. 300 Maj-Gen Frank S. Ross. Readers can purchase an exclusive model of this locomotive (pictured) from our sister publication Model Rail by visiting www.modelrailoffers.co.uk.

Another class that frequented the LMR was the ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0STs, and an RSH-built example will receive the Longmoor blue and red paintjob when it returns to steam later this year.

No. WD152 Rennes is nearing the end of a contract restoration on the Dean Forest Railway, and will steam for the first time in preservation at the line’s ‘Wartime Forest Steam Gala’ on May 13/14 and 20/21.

Built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns for the War Department in 1944 as No. WD75189 (W/No. 7139), it was transferred to the LMR in 1946 and numbered as WD152 Rennes. The locomotive was rebuilt by Hunslet and transferred to the National Coal Board in 1961 where it worked at Mountain Ash colliery until 1979 as No. 8.

It is expected that following its debut at the ‘Wartime Forest Steam Gala’, Rennes will remain at the DFR for the remainder of the 2017 season, alongside resident ‘Small Prairie’ No. 5541.
