    Hi,
Were the LMS enginemen ever issued with a standard hat badge (similar to the 'Engineman SR' ones)? I thought it would make a nice present for someone but have never seen one, so want to ask before I spend time looking!
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

Uniform is always a fun one...there are two 'basic' types of LMS cap badge. I believe but am not sure that enginemen were issued an oval with LMS in the centre, whereas platform/on-train staff etc were issued LMS letters in gilt with no backing, quite attractive. There are certainly replicas of the first about.

Thanks for the reply, I have looked through a few books and they appear to wear an oval badge as you say but that is all you can tell.

Any ideas where to buy such a thing? Apart from ebay of course

You could try Metal Badges - HOPS who do a range of railway replica badges and other things.

Depends whether you are after replica or original?

I would like an original if possible, and would be prepared to pay an honest price for one.

I have seen several genuine BR (M) cap badges about but would have preferred the LMS one.

That makes it harder, as you have to discount ebay - too much room for fiddles. Suggest your best bet is to go to one of the big railwayana meets - not something I'm up on as I'd bankrupt myself, perhaps someone else on here could recommend? One of the traders at these things would be likely to have one.

There were two steam locomens capbadges during the LMS period, the Top Link express drivers badge was a hollowed out chromium plated oval with the letters LMS inside, for a picture get hold of the video "Coronation Scot" produced by the LMS for the coronation in 1937,this shows driver Clarke, I think arriving at Crewe with Princess Elizabeth and the cap badge is clearly displayed, the other badge was just the chromium LMS issued to the lower orders of footplate men. As one of such people although starting just after nationalisation, I was issued with such a badge and although a bit mutilated due to constant head bashing I still possess it. I have endlessly looked for a genuine Top link drivers badge to no avail, but having said that do not confuse these so called replicas sold at fayres with the genuine article, they're nothing like it.

Thank you for the reply exsteamlocoman! I'll keep a look out and thanks for confirming they were chrome rather than brass.

Would you introduce yourself on the 'This is me!' thread, I am sure you would have some good stories to tell.

Here is a picture of an LMS top link drivers cap badge as mentioned above, nothing like the ones that you find on stalls at railway events.

Best bet to get one at an honest price is the Railwayana Swapmeet held at Quorn station on the GCR. Next one is on 13 Sept 2015. Well worth a visit as there will be people you can talk to who will guide you in the right direction. Details can be found on the net.
