Ho Ho - there's always one!
In the same way that an 00.05 service is regarded as the last service of the previous day, I think the IOWSR regard 1/1/14 as the last day of the operating season of 2013.
So therefore does anyone know when the 2014 season starts please? Sometime in March I presume?

I know Ryde tunnels are a little bit low, but I guess the flooding doesn't normally get this bad?

It was as bad as that about 4 years ago. As well as the tunnel being flooded, Ryde St Johns was flooded up to platform height last night and they have a big washout at Smallbrook. We are up and running again after clearing a number of fallen trees and filling in a minor washout.

Gary, just heard that a tree fell on two coaches slightly injuring two passengers.

I am glad that it was not worse.

    Kind regards

Seeing that level of flooding, does make you wonder why the builders of the line didnt keep it to the surface and do away with the tunnel completly, had the pumps been turned off? because that must have been some volume of water to over come the pumps to flood to that hight

Martin I don't think that for one moment that the pumps were off, they were simply overwhelmed. This is the second time that I have witnessed this level of flooding in the 8yrs that I have been on the Island. The tunnel being flooded is the least of Island lines problems, St Johns depot was flooded to a depth of 5ft! Two units will be out of commission for a long time. On to of that the have 20 washouts between Ryde and Rowborough.
As for the tunnel being built below sea level I am at a loss to explain that one. Changing the road layout would have removed the need for the tunnel, but what were the conditions of the original Act to build this section?

Since 1967 flooding in the tunnel creates an extra problem in that the 3rd rail electrical equipment also has the dry out.

Has the IWSR offered the use of its ballast train to shift the reported 600 tons of ballast? I guess SWT/NR would have to bring over an MPV to haul it as the 03 is undergoing overhaul.
