I think you will find that the steam times are the same as for the previous run on the 15th. May. Certainly the times at Canterbury are the same so I feel that you should be safe with these timings (which are still on u.k. steam).

Please bear in mind that the outward journey ran anything up to 15 mins. early last time!

Timings have been a little late recently due to problems with NR timing system (so I heard else where on this forum). They may be similar to The Canterbury Tornado 1 trip?

Outward timings appear to be within a minute of last time, however return times suggest that Sevenoaks is 18.15 (19 mins earlier) and Victoria is 19.05 (38 mins earlier).

    Hope this is of use.

It was about 8 minutes early this morning at Bromley South, running on the fast line.

    That's not good news.

I'm starting to think that there must be a virus or something that's attacking steam engines at the moment, given that so many are having problems at the moment

Appears 66 coming from Dollands Moor to take the train forward, with 60163 heading back loco and coach to Hither Green.

So it is ok to run on its own? Any reports on what the actual failure is then?

There is a statement on the A1 website - see here

During Tornado's lay-over at Canterbury whilst operating "The Canterbury Tornado" excursion for Path Finder Tours, fitters discovered a potential minor fault with a boiler stay. The prudent decision was taken to work the locomotive light engine back to Hither Green depot where a thorough examination can be made and any necessary repairs undertaken. The train returned to Newport by diesel traction.

It is planned that Tornado will still be available to work "The Cathedrals Express" for Steam Dreams on Thursday 3rd June 2010.

It certainly doesn't seem a good time for mainline steam. But if it is just one stay and not many others then 60163 will surely be a quick turn around.

surely one leaking stay is not enough to fail the loco unless it is a substantial leak? Given that tornado's boiler is all steel and welded it'll be interesting to see whats gone wrong...

A 'potential minor fault' implies it hasn't happened but could. It does seem a bit intriguing to keep a loco in steam if the problem could be significant and, if it wasn't, why take it off the train? A leaking stay isn't significant and, unless it has tell-tales (does it?), you aren't going to detect a broken one whilst it is in steam. Perhaps there's more to it than has been said, and that's not unusual.

Someone down at the BB was suggesting that Tornado has hollow stays so that when one fractures it weeps and its easily seen. Is this the case or just a bit of BS?

That was what my reference to tell-tales was about. Quite common practice on the continent but very rare in the UK.
