Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway Appeal Event at the Great Central Railway (Loughborough) Saturday 9th - Sunday 10th April 2011.
The GCR is holding a GWSR appeal event on 9/10th April to raise funds for the landslip appeals.
    Locos running:
    LMS 8F 48305
    LMS 8F 48624
    GWR 38xx 3850
and an as yet un annouced guest from the GWSR, that according to the GCR is a: 'locomotive that has never visited another preserved railway before abd is also new into working order and has an interesting story to tell'
Also the owning group of No:3850 have agreed to let their locomotive stay on for an extended period and in addition will be donating their steaming fees to the appeal.
    More details to follow.
Find more information on the GCR website.
Read the Totally-transport.co.uk news item here.
It could be worth adding this to the GWSR website for maximum publicity

Would be a delight(ful) event if held on 25th Dec.
Not exactly the world's best kept secret.

Can't be 45160 or 2807 then as they've both visited other preserved railways (Swanage and East Lancs in the case of the 8F and Llangollen in the case of the 28xx).

I suspect it will be 45160 running as 8F 8274. That was its LMS number whilst working in the UK during WW2 before being exported. I don't think it has run with this number since repatriation, and it certainly looks a lot more like a British 8F than it did before the overhaul.

I think that it's fantastic that the GCR are doing this. Thanks a million, guys. I hope that as many of you as possible go, so that the event will earn oodles of money for the appeal.

Good point Malc-narrows it down to a GWR/SR or BR kit of parts or a diesel.

However, the 8F hasn't visited any other preserved railways in operation condition!

It did when it returned to the country for a short while straight as received from Turkey. It was then withdrawn from service for overhaul, moved a little later to the ELR and then onwards to the GWR where it overhaul was completed. Although it has worked on another preserved railway in the UK (Swanage) It hasn't worked anywhere other than the GWR since returning to service.

I remember seeing 45160 on a low loader in a layby on the A1 near Biggleswade when it had been imported. I didn't realise it was 1989! I was only 5 or 6 at the time. My dad saw it on his way home from work and took my little sister and I up there when he got home.

At the risk of someone knowing better...

I don't think that 45160 has worked a public passenger train at a railway other than the GWSR in the UK. It worked freight trains at a Swanage gala in 1989 or 1990 and then a members passenger special in a pair with 46443 on one evening of said gala (due presumably to lack of vac brakes).

On arrival at Swanage from Turkey is was AO and only worked freight trains at a steam gala.Whether complete, operational, dismantled, freight or passenger trains the GCR statement is wrong unless want to argue that Swanage and ELR(certainly the later was) were previous homes rather than visits to other preserved railways.
It's similar to the WSR claims that 6201 had not worked on any other preserved line.

Re: GWSR Appeal Event at the Great Central Railway (Loughborough)

Quite correct, 45160 did not work any public passenger service at Swanage just the members train. In fact it didn't get to work the final goods train on the second day of the gala either due to it's poor condition (despite much hard work by the owners, it was basically in as-withdrawn Turkish condition and not in good health), I worked that with Tyseley's pannier 7752!

Pleased to see that Mike and his team have done such a fine job, must get to see the engine 'in the flesh' again sometime.

Re: GWSR Appeal Event at the Great Central Railway (Loughborough)

Does it really matter where 45160 has been in the past. It certainly has never pulled a farepaying passenger train anywhere except on the GWSR.

The important thing is that the GCR is helping to raise money for the GWSR.Three 8Fs working together at the same time ( a first in Preservation?) now there is spectacle.

So Guys stop being so pedantic and make a donation to the GWSR appeal or go to Loughborough for the event.

I have just been given details to add to our website which until now have been officially embargoed and can confirm that the 8F will be the visitor from our line.

That will be a good visitor to the GCR then - will be heading that way.

As for the first passenger train or not two things spring to mind - 1. First time it has worked a train anywhere else other than the GWSR in the UK with Vacuum brakes and
    2. certainly it's first crack at the windcutters!!!

Strictly speaking 2807 didn't "visit" Llangollen. The boiler restoration was completed there, and the locomotive was tested on that railway, before entering service on the GWSR.

    Dear all,

Just seen on the GWSR website that after its visit to the WSR for their spring gala No:2807 will be traveling to the GCR for the Gr8 escape gala on 9-10th April.
