Change of SUBJECT:CONVERTING DVD TO PC

    Hi all,

Is there a way i can transfer files from my DVD that i am recording using the DVD recorder (from my personal VHS stuff) to the PC. If i pop it in the PC what can i do?

    Cheers,
    Mark

Just drag the files from the Video_TS directory on the DVD to any directory on your hard drive. Your video editor might be able to import the .vob files directly, otherwise you'll need a conversion program. There plenty of free ones, google vob to mpeg - or whatever your preferred conversion format may be.

Cheers Bill, just found myself with a bigger problem! I was recording the Snooker on TV not our rly vid from 1994! I have worked out why (i needed to set the Source to SCART not the TV but now i just have sound no video? So if i set it to record it just records the sound but not the video.

I have it set up as follows:

    DVD recorder: VCR/TV: Wall:
    Aerial Output Aerial
    TV Output TV's Aerial slot
VCR Scart output VCR Scart (AV1)
TV SCART Output TV's Scart slot (AV1)

I can recieve sound and images from the TV but nothing on the SCART other than sound?

    Cheers,
    Mark

Looking at what you have put, I think you have two SCART leads.
If so try swapping them, you may have a faulty one.

That's what i thought it might of been, but no,still the same (Sound no video) do i need to connect any 'Red' cables etc?

I wonder if its a prob with the recorder? Real pity as my dad has some really classic footage.
    Cheers,

If both the DVD and VCR have the 3 phono plugs, usually yellow(video) white & red(stereo audio). and you have a suitable cable, try a direct connection twixt the two for a test.

Unless you really want one, I'd say stick to what you have and find the correct cable combination.

Can you connect the DVD recorder you have direct to the VCR by SCART?

BTW not all SCART cables are equall!
Some are one way, others have all pins wired and crossed over.

A bit cheaper to try with .... http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35909

To be honest i don't like the idea of VCR and DVD recorder been seperate.

I have pissed my mum off so much buggering about today that i daren't do all this again!

    What i have tried:

    About 10 different SCART'S
    2 Different VCR's
    2 Different Tele's

I have spent from 12pm till 10pm trying to get it to work and all i have to show is an hours worth of Snooker!

The way it was setup was to have a TV Output from the TV's aerial jack, the VCR SCART from VCR to DVD Recorder and TV Output SCART from DVD recorder to TV. I tried multiple different way,all of which i can't remember!
    Cheers,
    Mark

If you are considering spending that sort of dosh why nont consider this item first.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=224587&source=1

    Advantages:
    1. You can skip one stage of the transfer process. VHS -> PC, rather than VHS -> DVD -> PC.

    2. You can plug your Hi8 into it and again transfer straight to PC.

I can not say how good it is, I've never used it. Maplins are pretty decent with customer service (in my experience) so I doubt there is much to worry about.

Oh and it is less than half the price of the Pany!

Now that does look interesrting,Bill,it looks as though no extra hardware (Video Card wise) is required? If so i may just go for that one.

    Cheers,

    Hi guys,

Thanks for your fantastic help, dunno where i'd be without your help! (Well i wouldn't get very far for starters!!)

I got the VHS-PC delivered today and it is and extremley user friendly and easy product to use. Just uploading some classics from 1994 in Devon of 37's on China Clay and a Class 117 ride on the Looe Branch on 19th Jul' 1994,when i was aged 3 and 1 month!

    Cheers,
    Mark
