I was working Saturday at a wedding at a place called the Railway inn in Dinmore, Herefordshire on Saturday night. They have some lovely railway related bits and pieces there including some nice replica GWR name plates alongside the various other things.

However one thing did make me chuckle and maybe this is one for the future to go with the red 8f and Green 9f etc as the pub sits along an ex GWR line so it makes sense to have a GWR livered engine on the pub sign right? Well yes it is in GWR livery but it's not a King, Castle, Hall, Manor or anything GWR in fact, oh no they have chosen a different engine. You ready for this - [IMG] Yes they have used Flying Scotsman lol!!!.

This got me thinking, I remember years ago steam railway had a feature on silly pub signs however it was years ago. Have any members got any pictures of silly pub signs that are about? Is this the biggest howler in the UK or do you know of another worthy of that title?

There is a pub at Wateringbury, Kent. Back in the 90s it had a sign above the door and one on the traditional pole in the car park. The loco depicted was supposed to be a Schools but in the three depictions they used two different wheel arrangements - neither was a 4-4-0 - and the track look decidedly broad gauge. Just had a look on Google street view and the current sign really does look like a Schools.
Last time I went to Tisbury, the South Western pub had a Castle on the pub sign.

Never mind liveries, some are a bit geographically challenged too!

The Vicar's Inn in Arlesey used to be named The Steam Engine. I spite of being deep in GNR/LNER territory I don't recall ever seeing an LNER loco on the sign. The Talyllyn, Isle of Man and GWR all featured at some stage though and some damn fine paintings they were.

Over here in Olton, Birmingham. We used to have a pub called the Golden arrow who's sign had a PLM 231k in full British side Golden arrow regalia and Pullmans. Sadly it is now 3 blocks of apartments.

You don't specify location BUT there was a daily working of a Class 33 to Dunstable via Luton ( 30 miles north of London ) on the Midland Main Line - so not so daft !
