After failing while working a Dorset Coast Express with 60009 Union of South Africa last week 47580 was left in Jersey Sidings at Weymouth. To get the 47 back to Southall West Coast sent 37688 with 33012 as a means of getting 33012 back to Swanage, then 37668 went to Weymouth for 47580. Filmed at Wareham,Wool and Upwey.

What was the point of bringing the 37 onto the branch? Were they unable to split them at Wareham (third rail, dwell times etc?)

Or presumably it didn't need a second mainline crew that way?

Exactly. Bring a second mainline crew all the way from Southall just to drive 33012 from Wareham onto the Swanage branch, and then somehow get that crew to rejoin 37688 and 47580 later. Or just drive the whole ensemble onto the Swanage branch and drop off 33012.
