I thought this had it's own thread as it has been discussed (the discussion prompt us to book on it) but i've gone back to March and can't find one.

I see that the Steam Dreams site now advertises this as Steam/Diesel double heading from Staines to Salisbury, and as before Steam coming off at Westbury on the return. Any thoughts on the steam/diesel combo, possibl to reduce water consumption and the need of a water stop between Staines ( or in reality the start of the ECS move) & Salisbury?

From past experience SD will advise you to take a service train from Woking to Basingstoke, they have an arrangement with SWT for this kind of thing and often one of their staff will meet you at Woking and accompany you

Amazing really, a week to go, times published, yet the SD website still lets you book a ticket from a station the train doesn't stop at....

Shown as timed at 60 mph on RTT, yet 20 mins dep Andover to arr Salisbury.

Hmm, possible I guess with the box working hard as well as Tornado. Found one from 1959, (not mine!). 35007 on 13/470 did it in 20.00 exactly. 54 over Grateley and 83 down Porton.

It also gives details of a Diesel locomotive with a trailing load of 715 tonnes (yet again). Everyone else just ignores it. <BJ>

If the charter runs via Castle Cary on the return a diesel will be required to drag the coaching stock and Tornado back to Salisbury. As there are no details 0f a
further reversal at Laverstock Jct., it appears that the train will continue to run diesel hauled back to London. Is this correct or have I missed something? <BJ>

As Phil K said in his original post, SD's web-site now confirms Steam/Diesel double-header Staines-Salisbury in the morning, and steam replaced by diesel at Westbury in the evening. As a pragmatic itinerary, it looks fine. The problem is that this wasn't advertised from the beginning. I wonder whether Tornado will hitch a lift on the back of the train back to London, or will be turned and serviced at Westbury and follow light later? Probably the former.

The Westbury bit we've known about since we booked, it's the double header bit that's new.

As I recall, RTT always shows these steam specials as Diesel and almost certainly where one is actually in the consist they always seems to show an inflated weight for the train.

Certainly I've never seen one with Steam shown on it as the motive power.

The national system doesnt have an option for Steam locomotive, so they are always pathed as 75 /60 mph Diesel locos. As RTT is run off that.

It was discussed in the Steam Dreams 2013 thread.

The Steam/Disesel double heading was mentioned in one of the brochures.

Neither ! Tornado comes off at Westbury and returns engine+ POB directly to Southall via Chippenham and Reading !

Yeah, if nothing else it will be a chance to catch a look at Steam (albeit LE) through Reading. Thats rare enough at the moment.

The key here is that its likely to be Diesel/Steam. They wont make a consist up that needs to be broken apart to extract the diesel. It will be up front and simply detach and move on. From a photters point of view it make the Staines to Salisbury section a no-show.

Just been looking at the Network rail charter notice for this trip tomorrow, no mention of a diesel in the consist at all.
60163 on it's own from London to West Country and back to Westbury.
67 off of Eastleigh late afternoon to work train back to London.
Of course I could have missed something or the game plan may have been changed without a up-dated charter notice.
I also admit I have not spoken to anybody at work, I just go by the paperwork that is sent to me.
But I will be expecting to work from Wembley to Staines and then to Bristol with just 60163 (plus the train!).

The SD site now seems to indicate steam only again from Staines! What IS going on with this train!?
