Destined for the GWSR’s ‘Cotswold Festival of Steama’ gala on May 27-29, ‘7F’ No. 53808 passes the site of Leigh loop at the West Somerset Railway’s ‘S&D 50’ gala on March 5 2016. TOBY JENNINGS

The Stanier 4-6-0 was the first visiting locomotive announced for the ‘Workhorses of Steam’- themed gala back in February this year but, due to ongoing maintenance on the ‘Black Five’s’ boiler, the Great Central Railway-based engine will no longer be available.

It will be replaced in the line-up by S&D ’7F’ 2-8-0 No. 53808, courtesy of the West Somerset Railway and the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust.

Another 2-8-0 will also be visiting the railway, in the form of Greg Wilson’s ‘S160’ No. 6046, courtesy of the Churnet Valley Railway. The locomotive will be making its debut over the GWSR, although it is not the first ‘S160’ to visit the line in preservation, as No. 3278 ‘Franklin D. Roosevelt’ visited the line durng the 1990s.

The third visiting locomotive is GWR ‘14XX’ No. 1450, which will be running with auto-trailer No. W238, courtesy of Push Pull Ltd and the Severn Valley Railway. During the gala. No. 1450 will be working an autotrain shuttle between Toddington and Little Buckland, the current railhead on the railway’s extension to Broadway.

Five of the GWSR’s own fleet will be in steam during the event: Churchward ‘28XX’ No. 2807, ‘42XX’ No. 4270, ‘Manor’ No. 7820 Dinmore Manor, ‘Modified Hall’ No. 7903 Foremarke Hall and ‘Merchant Navy’ No. 35006 Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co.
