LMS Theme Day in Conjunction with Lancashire Weekend,22 November

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company (LMS) returns to Lancashire this November for a special steam theme day. Three steam engines, all built for the lMS, will be reappearing in their 1930s colour schemes for one day only. The day is particularly special as all the steam locomotives in use are of the same type that would have worked on the Bury Based railway throughout the age of steam.

Two steam locomotives will work a two-train service operating between Heywood and Rawtenstall with "Jinty" locomotive, 16407 being used for "driver for a tenner" duties in Bury station; this is your chance to drive a steam engine and gain an insight into what goes on behind the controls of one of these fascinating workhorses.

In service throughout the day will be:

    • 13065 LMS 2-6-0 Crab Locomotive Built 1927
    • 12322 LMS 0-6-0 A Class Locomotive Built 1896
    • 16407 LMS 0-6-0 Jinty Class Locomotive Built 1926
As an additional extra, an evening photo shoot will take place at the steam sheds where the three locomotives will pose in a recreation of a 1930s steam shed. Watch this space for further details and booking information.

16407 was the first LMS number for 47324.

Anyone know, are members tickets suspended under "gala" rules, or can the wife and I have a train riding day using our concession?

Ordinary fares will apply on this weekend, which means that members concessionary fares are available, or indeed if you still have an unused box on the back of your current ELRPS card valid for 2014 then this can be one of your 'frees' for the year.

Thanks Spencer, it doesn't seem clear to this old gimmer if these theme days are deemed "gala" or not.
Is the diesel theme day on 8 November still on, the link on the ELR website is switched off, I can't get it to go through for more details?

    This too:
    Lancashire Weekend – 22 – 23 November 2014
The East Lancashire Railway commemorates the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament by King Edward I of England to attend what later became known as The Model Parliament. Celebrate this momentous event with us! Every two adults wearing red roses will be offered two for one fulll line return travel on the railway. Red roses are available from the retail shop at Bolton Street Station. To mark the occasion The Trackside will be selling traditional Lancashire hot pot and local real ale. The buffet on Platform 3 will be selling a selection of hot pies and Lancastrian cakes. On both days we hope to have a selection of Morris men and traditional clog dancers along the railway. A vintage Lancashire United bus will also be providing tours around Bury town centre. At noon on both days of the event the Lancashire proclamation will be read out. So join us here on the East Lancashire Railway as we celebrate our heritage and our loyalty to the Queen, Duke of Lancaster.
(No other discounts or promotions allowed, conditions apply and subject to availability)

The event has now been extended to include Sunday so it is now a theme weekend.

    More details are here: http://www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk/steam-weekends/

    Sunday's events:

The A Class and the Crab will double head the first train of the day before the 12322 takes up its place on the dining train.

16407 will be used as station pilot and will shunt the dining stock and heat the coaches before being used for driver a tenner duties in the afternoon. This will also be the last chance to 16407 before it taken out of service ready to commence its annual overhaul.

Annual overhaul? I know the loco has had lots of problems and repairs over the last 8 years or so but planning for an annual overhaul seems a bit excessive?!

Should have said '10 yearly overhaul', having been granted a short extension earlier in the year.

Is the DMU still running the diesel diagram Sunday? Spoils the "theme" weekend a little if so. Pity the jinty can't do a few last round trips instead.

Was originally a one day theme with ordinary fares but was partially extended (mainly because one of the big magazines incorrectly quoted two days) to cover the Sunday also with ordinary fares, as in any event 2 steam locos are required for the services running. Yes, one of the DMU's will be out on the diesel diagram, to steam a fourth loco would not be economical or possible bearing in mind that the larger locos are being carefully managed to avoid heavier maintenance /wash-outs in the Santa train season which starts the week after (12 running days, 2 steam, 2 diesel locos each day, 4 car DMU, 105 trains, capacity just over 40000 [37000+ carried last year] - and well on the way to needing that full capacity) if it spoils then sorry but the bigger picture has to be seen in this case.
47324/16407 is already on an extension (for which we are extremely grateful from the insurance people) but is only allowed on station limits.
