Out of curiosity, why not? Will Axe be capable of hauling all four heritage coaches between Wistlandpound and Woody Bay?

Yes to Axe (AFAIK). Matheran might be suitable as if someone else restores it!!

Was talking to someone at Leighton Buzzard yesterday and was told that it is too big for what they need so I doubt it'll go there. Personally I agree with others earlier in the thread and would like to see this at The Welsh Highland Railway or The South Tynedale.

Hmm. They made good use of it whilst it was there.

I am not sure which person spoken to but they are mistaken, as reported Darjeeling Mail we are looking for expressions of interest in supporting our bid, and if enough support is forth coming we will be putting a bid together.
With the railways connections to Indian railways in the form of twinning it would fit very well in the collection.
One of the main issues with the loco is that it is only designed to work at about 12mph so would make quite a long journey on the Welsh Highland Railway.

My apologies, I wasn't intending to mislead... I was obviously told wrong. I'm glad to hear they are looking to put a bid together the Leighton Buzzard has a very unique and varied set of Locomotives and '740' would certainly add to that. Hopefully we'll see it running there again in the near future.

61 photos of a trip in 2012 on the Matheran Light Rly from Mumbai can be seen here. Trains were diesel-hauled. No 741 is plinthed at Matheran but was inaccessible. No 738 and Darjeeling 794 were both out of use at Neral Junction. I have also included a photo of 739 at Delhi Rly Museum along with two Matheran carriages and a railcar.

Brilliant photos, thanks. I got to see very little of India's railways but I did visit the small museum at Mysore

Let's hope this fine loco is back in steam soon somewhere suitable.

I have heard that 740 has been sold to a charitable organisation but that it is not Leighton Buzzard. Shame, given they restored it in the first place. It was also a gift to the UK!

At this stage, all I can say is that a number of bids have been received. An announcement will be made in due course when news is finalised.

It still isn't the Leighton Buzzard Railway.

Still hoping for a change of heart so it can be returned to where it first steamed in the uk and the railway that is twinned with the Matheran.
Would be a good excuse to make some replica coaches to go with it. (makes more sense if you read gala thread as well)
