I don't think this link has been posted here, Tom Ingall's BBC report on the frame cutting:

So the article says "what will be only the second mainline steam locomotive to be constructed in Britain since 1960". Is that really true? I thought some of the other new builds (e.g. 'The Unknown Warrior') would be classed as 'mainline'?

Depends which gets finished first i suppose... otherwise its behind Patriot,Clan,82045, Nightowl, Brighton Atlantic and a few others which already have Frames cut and we're all designed for mainline use....

Were the 3MT 82000's really mainline engines? I had gotten the impression they were more targeted to branch lines.

I think the context is mainline as opposed to heritage line use.

They certainly operated in a main line environment on occasion, & their last workings were Waterloo pilot/ECS duties.

That could be right (loose writing on the part of the reporter), but... even there, aren't engines like the 'The Unknown Warrior' intended for just as much use on the national network as 'Prince of Wales'? (I somehow doubt that PoW will spend all its time on the national network - look at 'Tornado'.) From the list that Class8Mikado mentioned, several are way too big to 'really stretch their legs' on a heritage line.

Ah, well, not really that important. I just get irked when I see incorrect things in the press (which, sadly, happens all too often).

Perhaps not but .... 2018? in time to borrow Tornados tender for a year actually looks realistic ...or failing that put the boiler higher up the list so that tornado will only be out whilst the bottom end is checked over....
Have we had a debate about whether any other colour than Apple Green (Lner) is acceptable ? yet

As it's a new build rather than a replica, any livery should be ok. I thought 60163 looked great in grey with the website address on the side! Even better was the National Express silver and white mock up on the Fictitious Liveries site.

I can't believe I'm rising to this, as Apple Green is the answer to every livery debate, but how about the Silver Jubilee livery ;)
