I think I have worked it out. The new tubeplate is under the old one and has not yet been cut to shape. When we did a similar job we pushed through a pilot drill and then the one of the required size. This also explains the need to remove the studs so that those holes can also be plumbed. It help to have someone who can re-sharpen drills as the guides are general only for the smaller sizes. Perhaps ilvaporista will confirm or explain otherwise.

The old tube plate is being used as a pattern to drill the new welded version. To centre the drill with respect to the old hole these bushes are used to ensure that the correct centres are kept.

Sorry for the delay in answering, at the weekend I am mostly in the workshop or being a taxi service.

The boiler from Andrew Barclay 1385 'Rosyth No. 1' has today successfully passed its out of frames steam test. Transport is booked for next Monday to return the Boiler to Blaenavon.

We hope to have the loco in traffic by late May this year.

There is currently no progress on any of the other Barclays at Blaenavon. Once Rosyth is competed we shall be looking for another project to work on, so it is possible that one of the other Barclays might see some progress then.

Also due to arrive soon is 200hp steam Sentinel 9622 'Swansea Vale No. 1.

Did you have to do any work on the loco's injectors Alex? We have a Barclay at the Spa Valley which we need some work soon and we need help/information.

The injectors worked perfect last time Rosyth was operational (around 10 years ago). So we plan to give them a clean up and check over, then give them a try.

    Latest from Foxfield.
Wimblebury is ready for her boiler lift which will be taking place in the next fortnight which will also see the boiler lifted from Eustace Forth ready for a full survey.
Florence No.2 has had a full set of new springs fitted and is ready for a steam test along with Whiston.
Bellerophon still has a couple of outstanding items from winter maintenance but should be back in service by May.
Dubs is being prepared for a boiler inspection.

The springs have returned from Jones Brothers (Engineering) of Darlaston at the end of February, as quoted on delivery of the springs to them; the job is on spec, on time and on price. Simon checked the eyes with a prototype spring hangar pin made to the Hunslet drawing and this was a a neat slide in fit. Mass production of the pins is under way.

Progress continues to be good. The newly re-metalled big end bearings are fitted and having got them back in place the stripped down and re-painted big ends, connecting rods and eccentrics motion are back on the loco. Work has begun on re-installing the braking system, the brake beams are back on with the rods to follow. Work is also continuing on the lubrication system which in practice has been pretty well stripped out.
The work on the boiler continues to move forwards with the inner firebox being back in place in the boiler casing.

    More to follow

Not long ago we were heating paint tins in boiling water over a camp stove to make it runny enough to use. Things have changed and decent weather has speeded the work. Both outsides of the frame have been cleaned off and primed, the sandboxes have been cleaned down, and primed and undercoated, as have many other components. The frames appeared to have been coated in Waxoyl, and while this may have been a nuisance to remove, there was no rust on the frames at all.

The 8F team have borrowed a 1 3/4" reamer from their friends, with a hand operated ratchet drive and journeyman clamp to fit round the frames; if this succeeds in making the spring hanger pin holes round again then the way to re-wheeling will be open. This is an urgent task due to imminent tracklaying in the area where we work.

Sorry about the late reply but I needed a new password and have just got round to it.
I worked with Barclay 4 wheelers Fitting/ Driving and everything else .
I don't think the injector body comes to bits. Your problem is on the hottest of summer days the water in the tank gets warm, but the main reason for injectors not picking up is the water pipe that runs from the tank to the injector body, due to its location ,also get very warm if not hot. Hot water is not good for simple injectors. A temporary cure is to tip cold water over the later pipe ,or to refill the tank.
We had plenty of cold water to draw up on as it was quarry work, always wet places.
It only happened on the hottest of days, so nothing permanent was considered worth doing.
Maybe lagging the smokebox under the tank, also lagging the water pipe tank to injector may help.

    Vulcan.

Currently on loan at Beamish Museum and due to feature in the "Great North Stam Fair" next weekend. Dan Cramp has posted a very nice video on Youtube, which can be founfd by searching "Vulcan On tour".

    Bagnall 2746 "The Duke".

Both outsides of frames now in second coat undercoat and waiting for reliable warm weather for black gloss. A serious start has been made on the insides of the frames, but these will take some weeks to complete. The first of the spring pin holes has been reamed out round, seven egg shaped holes to go.

After a delay in obtaining tubes they have now been cut to length and installed into the boiler. They have yet to be expanded but that should not take too long as there are only 65!

Shortly to emerge from the Beamish paint shop in a new colour scheme.

    Bagnall 2746 "The Duke"
All wheels and one side of the frame now in black gloss; cleaning and painting and reaming continues.

David Wright at Locomotive Maintenance sevices is collecting orders for austerity smokeboxes and ashpans and we intend to join the production run.

The loco has been given LNWR style lining, which it appears to have carried according to old photographs and entered into solo passenger service at Rowley. Due to return to Barrow Hill at the end of June, will be at Foxfield for their July gala.
