Some of the boiler repairs recently have been so extensive and expensive it has been said it would be better to build a new unit from scratch. The Flying Scotsman and Lord Nelson sagas both spring to mind. Also, many engines have new tenders built some with the handbrake column and locker doors of the original vehicle. Also some of the last locos to leave were skeletons with frames, cylinders, wheels and knackered boilers. So is it actually much worse? How much of the fixtures, fittings and casting were left? Just sayin' though it is extremely unlikely it will ever turn a wheel again

Is it becoming a folly to regard locomotives and rolling stock not owned by a charitable trust (which has certain legal restrictions placed on it) as preserved? The list of items being "lost" grows rapidly each day. Granted there is probably too much stuff collected for it all to be kept, but we seem to be going through a period of clearing out, and we will regret the loss in some cases. Of course individuals can do with their property what they wish, and rightly so, but personally I have always questioned whether it was right for locomotives to be owned by a single individual preferring the narrow gauge model of ownership by the company, that for the most part provides a surer future for both railway and locomotive (and I think the principle can be extended to most railway "things"). That is not to say that most owners aren't entirely responsible, and I am sure there are few if any who would want their item of railway history destroyed, but when it is a choice between the children eating or the scrapman's torch.....

In the case of items which get passed through a legacy, will the next generation treat the item with the attention and care it warrants or seek to maximise only the cash value in the short term. I was told this weekend of a reasonably well known heritage collection where the next generation (being groomed to take over the trust formed by their Grandfather) are interested only in the commercial angle. Without the protection of trust status it is likely the collection would not be open to the public and the property used for more remunerative purposes.

well, few of them are actually "preserved" Many are simply using up the residual life left in them when withdrawn and tough decisions and much money will come about sooner or later. The only true "preserved" locos are the likes of the Dean Goods and City of Birmingham which have a secure if inactive life ahead of them. It's a pity 42859 couldn't have ben reassembled and displayed in some form

Am I the only one thinking this isnt a surprise. Other preserved locos have ben cut up before. You cant preserve everything. We have two crabs left. One of which will be running shortly. And one which is safe and secure in the collection. Yes its sad but metal prices at what they are. Is anyone really shocked by this?

Perhaps preserved isn't that useful a term. I mentioned in another thread how the aviation people talk about items being restored or conserved, and how that differs. A Barry wreck sitting in a head shunt is hardly being conserved, and it ain't being restored either. Maybe the best description of its status is "not scrapped yet".

It's a moot point about 'preservation' i.e. stored unrestored by a sole individual. This was nothing unusual in days past (and was salvation for many locos) but there can always be bad outcomes if passion wanes or, worse still, the owner is seduced by scrap prices. I'm not saying this is what happened here but there's been a lot of mis-information about this particular loco for a few years now. Sadly, if the owner doesn't just donate what's left to a bone fide railway group I predict that what is left will disappear altogether. It's such a shame after having survived this long but there is nothing, legally, anyone else can do now :(

    Big thread resurrection......

Did anything further ever happen with 42859- is it now a certain lost cause, no boiler and wheels never turned up?
