I know this is a long shot but I have recently come across this photo of myself with my brother and father, taken on the ELR. What I am after is location, loco and likely year. Myself, Brother and Father..jpg

I would have said Loco is Ivatt 2MT 46441. I think it might be Rawtenstall from the curve of the Platform and probably before the main building was complete, judging by the shelter which I don't think was still there last time I visited. Mind you, that is a good few years ago!

Thanks, forgot to add that my Father died at 98 in 1999 so it's going to be a bit before that, although he was always ready for a day out with his lads up until his last few months.

Definitely Rawtenstall, and the shelter was still there last year.

Rawtenstall ? or Ramsbottom as both have similar type shelters on the curving platform ? The snow on the ground would suggest a possible Santa Train which could be the Ramsbottom - Rawtenstall shuttle before the covered roof went on - as the Santa Trains normally arrived on the other platform working in top 'n tail mode; I have records of 46441 working on the ELR from February 1995 so it could be any time between 1995 - 1999.

It would have been Rawtenstall as we would not have got out to pose for photo part way through the journey, and I also think that although it was winter, it was not a Santa Train, looks most likely to have been 95/96.
Anyway thanks to all for your input.

46441 was definitely running on the ELR in 1998.
    Don't know about 97 or 99.

Well the picture has to be before 2000/01 when it was repainted black. Pretty sure it ran both years you mention John although not certain.

don't think 46441 was ever black; it certainly isn't now that it is on display in the Ribble Steam Railway museum.

    Entered traffic 8/93 at ELR.
It was painted black both pre LMS red and post BR red.

Explains why the current paintwork is more in keeping with a museum loco than after 10 years of service. Worrying that people believe what journalists say.

If you search "46441" on Google Images, you are greated with lots of photos of the loco in maroon, even an MSTS model of it!, however Bachmann made their 00 gauge model of 46441 in BR Brunswick Green with orange and black lining, but futhermore the Bachmann Collecter's Club edition of 46441 was in the maroon with the BR Late Crest on the tender, as per real life.

I presume you mean "in preservation" Fred. It went straight from BR lined black to 'Fairground livery' at Carnforth c1968. Of course Bachmann simply got their 00 model wrong - 46441 never was a green 'un. Ray.

Even journalists can get it wrong - especially if they don't / can't find sources to show otherwise. If wrong they need to apologise - and in my case I apologise but my quick check had identified it as LMS Maroon / Red, although further checks following your info has unidentified some images showing lined black livery from October 1998 on ELR services which may also help the OP to identify the date.

Just showed the picture to my brother who seems to think it was in the 80s, is this a possibility?

I doubt it Ralph. The ELR didn't open 'til 1987 and didn't reach Rawtenstall (where I'm sure that picture was taken) until about 1991/2.
