some photos on Flickr now including the new Bronwydd "down home". A total of 4 new signals required on the extension, this one will be worked by a motor being 559 yards from the box (or so the marker says!). There is only one more post to erect (the "up starter") and then the final fitting of arms, lamps etc can begin as well as the wire runs.

In other news our SK is due out of the carriage shed this week sporting a new coat of maroon after some repairs. Next in the shed is one of the DMU end cars, to be repainted in BR Green (from Blue and Grey).

Welsh Guardsman is progressing at Llangollen with the steam test on the boiler due imminently followed by final reassembly.

    Regards

    Matt

Its been a few weeks since the last update but since then the platform wall has been completed and two more panels of track are being installed taking us right up to the road bridge- see pics here http://www.flickr.com/photos/gwilirailway/9394202552/

The plan over the next few weeks will see completion of the platform and more ballasting, before the final track laying to link up the platform road.

    regards

    Matt

    Update-

From tomorrow work continues on the platform at Abergwil Jtn. Site levelling and backfilling of the platform will take place and w/c 19th will see further ballast trains. A few more panels of track have been laid on the extension and the end of the line now is within the shadow of bridge 5. No more track can be laid until the contractor finishes the platform but after that the last 1/4 mile will be installed, completing this phase of the project.

Meanwhile daily services continue to run with Haulwen the staple motive power. In the carriage shed the DMU power car is turning green and work is also ongoing on the vintage carriages in the yard.

The return of Welsh Guardsman is eagerly anticipated in the very near future.

    Regards

    Matt

The Gwili Railway is getting ready for its much-anticipated ‘Anything Goes’ Gala on Sunday 29 September. The gala will provide an opportunity for visitors young and old to enjoy an intensive and varied service between Bronwydd Arms and Llwyfan Cerrig stations, and is set to be the last major enthusiast event to take place before our Carmarthen extension is opened in spring 2014.
Star billing will go to our locomotive ‘Haulwen’, although it is anticipated that it will be joined by new-arrival ‘Welsh Guardsman’, which has been the subject of comprehensive overhaul at the Llangollen Railway. It is expected that both locomotives will be in operation, subject to availability. The gala will feature ‘double-heading’, with both locomotives working hard on the gradient between Bronwydd Arms and Llwyfan Cerrig. It is also believed to be the first such pairing of locomotives to take place on the railway.
Further attractions will include the chance to see some of the railway’s diesel fleet in action, with the steam service supplemented by our Class 117 DMU. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to drive our Class 03 shunter within the confines of Bronwydd Arms Station for a £5 surcharge (subject to availability and on a first-come, first served basis only), browse the visiting trade stands, savour the atmosphere in our popular Gwili Buffet, and ride our miniature railway at Llwyfan Cerrig.
Tickets will be available on the day at Bronwydd arms, and will cost Adults £9, Children £3.
The timetable for the event will be available shortly, with loco allocations to follow shortly before the event. When available, the timetable will be available through UK Heritage Hub’s Blog - http://locoyard.com/heritage-railways/heritage-hub/ and their Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/ukheritagehub/
All in all, it is set to be an enjoyable and varied day out with a heady mixture of steam and diesel, and visitors will be able to see why ‘Anything Goes’ at the Gwili on 29 September!
For tickets further information, please contact: Gwili Railway, The Railway Station, Bronwydd Arms, Carmarthen, SA33 6HT or telephone 01267 238213.

    Extension update
The backfilling of the platform is now completed and we move onto the next stage of construction i.e. edging and coping work.
Track Bed graded from station site back to Bridge 5 (south end), now ready for base ballast
As you can see from the attached photo, the limit of rail is just at the north end of the bridge. We can't lay track under the bridge until the platform work is finished.
Ballasting this week, a picture of the loading pad with JCB at work, trains will continue this week with D2178 in charge

    Regards

    Hi all -

For those that are interested, the loco roster for the next few weeks is below. Please note that (as ever) this is posted in good faith, however plans do sometimes change - so if you're travelling especially to ride behind a specific locomotive, it is best to ring the railway in advance (01267 238 213) to doublecheck.

On normal service days, trains depart Bronwydd Arms at 1030, 1150, 1320, 1450 and 1610 - NB the 1610 ex BA runs in August only.

August 20th - No.1731 "Jennifer" (plus evening charter - private hire, dep BA approx 1830)
    August 21st - No.1731 "Jennifer"
August 22nd - No.1731 "Jennifer" (Cream Tea Specials)
    August 23rd - No.3879 "Haulwen"
    August 24th - No.3879 "Haulwen"
    August 25th - No.3879 "Haulwen"
    August 26th - No.3879 "Haulwen"
    August 27th - No.3879 "Haulwen"
    August 28th - No.3879 "Haulwen"
August 29th - No.3879 "Haulwen" (Cream Tea Specials)
August 30th - No.3879 "Haulwen" (plus evening charter - private hire, dep BA 1930)
    August 31st - No.3879 "Haulwen"
September 1st - No.1731 "Jennifer" (NB 1610 ex BA does not run after this point)
    September 2nd - No.1731 "Jennifer"
    September 3rd - No.1731 "Jennifer"
    September 4th - No.3879 "Haulwen"
September 5th - No.3879 "Haulwen" (Cream Tea Specials)
    September 6th - No Service
September 7th - No.3879 "Haulwen" (Jazz Train, prebook only - dep BA 1930)
    September 8th - No.3879 "Haulwen"

    It is a busy month!

As Matt says, D2178 is also out this week - working ballast trains on the extension.

    Cheers,

    Phil.

    Another update...

After a week of ballasting, most of the track between Bronywdd and the present end of the line has been ballasted (around 1.5 miles), some pictures attached. Just needs the tamper next for the alignment to be done.
S and T continue installation work on the signals south of Bronywdd
preparation for track laying on the last 1/4 mile on the extension are ongoing, rail and sleepers being positioned at the side of the cess ready for laying. Looks like the station area will have traditional wooden sleepers rather than concrete..

    Regards

    Matt

The pics I posed on this site should be accessible. There are some further photos of the work on the Facebook site, these usually get uploaded to the railway Flickr pages within a few days. If they do I'll post the link

    Cheers

Nice vid! I notice some lineside fencing still in place, but I assume there'll be a lot to do and redo?

    Extension update-

the edging/coping surface on the new platform is coming on well, picture attached

The second photo shows the view from the end of the platform looking north. The current end of track is just beyond the bridge in the distance, and track laying on this final section is due to start within the next couple of weeks.

Elsewhere, Welsh Guardsman is nearing completion at Llangollen with the cab and tank now fitted and pipework ongoing.

    Regards

    Matt
