    Hi all,

Would anyone know what type of ejector was fitted on the ROD 2-8-0s that were bought by the GW after WW1, was it a Dreadnought (if so which type) or did they get standard GW fittings (if so was it what what is refered to as the single cone ejector (although really it is the ejector with separate air and steam valves)

Thanks in advance for your help

    Duncan

Please excuse me if I'm being ignorant, but weren't the GWR RODs steam brake only with no vacuum brake? And as such, wouldn't they have lacked any kind of ejector?

Thanks for your message Jim, I did not know they were steam braked only. Do you know what type of brake valve was fitted on them as there must have been a valve to work the steam brake?

I have no idea what they had in the way of brake valves I'm afraid - I guess you'll need to seek out a monograph on the class - assuming there is such a thing on what seems to have been the most widely disliked class on the GWR...

[later] Having consulted RCTS, it has very little more to say on brakes.
Evidentally they came from the ROD with Westinghouse air brakes and a pump on the side of the smokebox. The air braking was always removed, but in some cases the brackets for the pump were left behind!
The other note is that when ATC was fitted to the class it only provided warning signals, not automatic braking so a special version of the apparatus without the vacuum brake arrangement was fitted.

That is really helpfull Jim as it suggests they were fitted with the combined brake, with automatic attachments, but that a separate reservoir could not or was not fitted. That would make it like a GW steam braked engine that just has the very small res in the setter cylinder, which might then explain why the ATC only gave a warning signal as the setter is small where there is no external reservoir.

Maybe there is a GW expert out there who knows more on the RODs. I will look to see if there is an book on the class on the GW.
