I remember a Polycell advert of the 1970's, where I think it was 45212, decorated with wallpaper! I may be wrong on the loco number.

You're right about the loco number but I thought it was a different company doing the advertising.

Edit : the advert was for Solvite.

Reported on the other forum that 45231 has been on a test run from Carnforth. Thought there would have been more speak of it than this, does anyone else know anything?

I've been lucky over the years and have been rostered on a few black 5 footplates and I agree that 5305 is one of the best ones out there in my opinion
It was always nicknamed the black 5 GTI, and always performs well

I was told by some K&WVR lads that the paper kept peeling off.

A bit of the wallpaper was on display in Grosmont shed not all that long, so some of it must have clung on for something like three decades.

You beat me to it as I remember tales that when 5212 arrived at Grosmont and was overhauled "scraps/fragments" of wallpaper were found in obscure places on the engine.

Nothing like some gummed up paper to help the running of an engine!

Back to the wallpaper, it was Solvite wallpaper adhesive and I seem to recall the people involved telling that the paper or possibly a backing sheet was stuck on with some industrial strength adhesive which was not Solvite, but things were different then in advertising!

With 45231 out on the Fellsman today, I think that she is louder. I believe that she will give 44932 a run for her money on Hermandon, Copy Pit at Full Throttle. I like 5305 as well.

I have traveled behind 45428 Eric Treacy a few years back on the Nymr. Lovely to see a black 5 in the flesh.

That's correct, 3 black fives liveried in experimental green, I worked as a fireman on M4763 liveried in a BR version of LNER green in this condition, but by then in 1949 renumbered 44763, remaining in this condition until at least 1957.I would like to see one of the preserved black fives liveried as such, unfortunately there is not a suitable candidate available the only one having the correct boiler geometry with the top feed in the correct position being 44767 and that hasn't got the correct motion, hard luck I say, but you never know someone might pull one out of the hat one day, miracles do happen in this business.

Another preserved Black 5 livery variation was 45407 in pseudo 'Furness Red' at Carnforth in the late 60's. BTW when 44806 went from Southport to Llangollen via MOSI there were still vestiges of green showing inside the BR crest which Gordon Walker missed when he repainted it on arrival from Lakeside. Ray.
