From memory, 5699 was the engine lined up for preservation at the time, but once the wheels had been cut, she was deemed beyond salvation and attention turned to 5690. I was there the weekend after she derailed, working on 2968. 5699 was still on the floor at the time, leaning over at a precarious angle and with the wheels already cut through; a very sad sight.

Dr. Beet wanted to buy 5699 for its boiler so I don't really know. He did eventually support Brian Oliver's project to get 5699 restored although he made the point that without Brian competing with him the price would have been less, I suppose Brian might have said the same!

The boiler was in excellent condition having been overhauled at crewe only shortly before withdrawal.

Does beg the question - If prior to the Barry derailment 45699 looked the better prospect, why not just purchase her and an extra driving wheelset from 45690 ?.

Well, a very respected and well informed person told me at Pickering that 45699 had been out on test to Hellifield, today. I came home expecting to see pages of posts about it on Nat Pres, but nothing! Has everyone on here missed it or has my informant been dreaming? Very unusual, if he has!

That wouldn't surprise me - everybody looking at the tours - no thought of anything else possibly happening...

Cat & mouse or what? :D
