Intended to post earlier but lack of battery charge put paid to that. Some fantastic driving and handling by Mr Hodgson, got us going again in what was very difficult conditions, due to leaf fall and drizzle on the gradient between Whalley and Langho. Departed Cherry Tree approximately 70 mins down. Thanks to all involved for a great day out. Worth every penny spent!

I must agree some excellent enginemanship by Mr Hodgson, after being held at Whalley for the DMU to clear we started off ok with a couple of slips and then seemed to accelerate well across the viaduct but started slipping very shortly after clearing the viaduct and shortly came to a stand. After the initial hand sanding mentioned earlier we got away again but then came to another stop. Even from the 11th coach you could hear that as soon as the regulator was opened to any degree the slips started. Again the crew hand sanded and initially it seemed touch and go but every slip seemed to be controlled as soon as it happened and the loco seemed to be on on it's adhesive limit for the rest of the climb, it must have been a great relief to the footplate crew when we topped the summit.

The train crew kept the passengers informed of what was being done to sort out the problems from the initial slip to a stand which I am sure was appreciated by all on board. At the water stop at Cherry Tree Bob went on the tannoy to explain more thoroughly the problems at the sharp end and gave credit to Mr Hodgsons driving skills.

Thanks again to all involved in todays tour.

I did video most of the climb from Whalley and will have a look at what I managed to capture either later tonight or tomorrow.

    Neil.

So well done Mr Hodgsson and Mr Meanley and not to forget the work put in by the support crew methinks.

Look forward to your video Neil - in the meantime here's my stuff from earlier in the day on Shap, near Langwathby and finally at Kirkby Stephen Station where I had a chat to Mike and Steve:

Some great stuff posted already, nice fots and vids.

The enginemanship on the return as already mentioned was some of the best of all time,Gordon really handled the loco well, the bit after Ramsgreave Tunnel I think actually was a very difficult bit to overcome but he managed to do it,brilliantly. I certainly think it is on par with Pete Roberts with 30777 on Honiton Bank and Peter Walker with 61994 on Glen Douglas, actually managing what you would consider to be impossible. Judging by the condition of the Clitheroe bound track (furthest away from the worst trees) It's amazing we got going at all, absolutely epic. I had walked forward to about the 4th coach for the restart and eventual climb to the summit and managed to get it on video so i'll upload it,hopefully this evening. Thanks to all, particularly to those who got us out of the mess and those that sanded all the way from our initial position to Langho station. I hope there is a video uploaded from Langho,it was really special passing there with the constant wheel slip been expertly controlled.

    Cheers,
    Mark

After the usual spirited start from Carnforth, the first setback came with a 20mph speed restriction just approaching Oxenholme. Broken rail being the reason, this meant having to work hard to regain the lost momentum, recvoering from this extra effort meant that Tebay was passed at only around 55 mph, and then i suspect the regulator was eased at Scout Green to avoid slipping on the flange greaser, so passing the summit at about 30 mph was under the circumstances not unexpected. The performance on the S&C could not be faulted as can be seen from the various excellent videos. The details of the problems from Whalley onwards are best left to someone else as I am not best placed with all the facts.
I, and quite a few others, went to see Gordon when we stopped at Crewe. I think he was a bit overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to congratulate him on his efforts and shake his hand. I believe he did say that he had never experienced such difficult conditions before. Also all those on the support crew must be thanked for getting out and sanding in the wet and miserable conditions.

Here's my video of 6201 restarting her train between Billington and Langho, reaching Wilpshire summit and accelerating through Pleasington after the Cherry Tree water stop. As others have commented, superb handling and driving by Gordon Hodgson.

Who ever said that you cannot get spectacular videos in the dark, and just listen to Gordon Hodgson control the slipping as we climbed away from Langho from around 3.00 on Linesiders video.

Thanks to all those who went out and posted up footage from yesterdays run, my footage from Whalley onwards is here,

6201 With the Cumbrian Mountaineer 17/11/2012 Part 2 - YouTube

It is pretty dodgy in parts as I wasn't sure what to edit out, it sounds around 3 minutes in that we have a piece of very resilient chewing gum stuck to a wheel on coach G...or was that coach X....?

According to a comment on another site the track has been treated every night and the operator on RHTT the previous night seemed recitent to travel at a slow speed...........
