A new book on the Penrhyn Quarry Railway has just been announced by the Association of 16mm NG Modellers. See Penrhyn Quarry Railway - Modeller's Guide

Don't be put off my the modelling content if it's not specifically of interest as there's loads of historical info and photos in it.

As it says on the website, this exciting new book will be sent to all 16mm Association members and those who join this year (until stocks are exhausted) but will not be on general sale. Due to a special arrangement with the 16mm Association, a limited number of copies will be available for purchase by Penrhyn Quarry Railway Society members. I can supply more details if any one is interested.

And another new book on the Penrhyn Quarry Railway! I spotted this one while doing a book search. It's title is "Penrhyn Quarry Railway" and is a print-on-demand book by Ferdinand Maria Quincy and available from the USA for £32. It's not one I've heard of and am loathed to spend that sort of money without at least some idea what its content is. Does anyone have a copy or know of it?

I can't find that book on Amazon, but there are several others by the same author on a bewildering variety of non-railway topics. Their descriptions contain the ominous words "Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online"...so I would guess the Penrhyn Quarry book is the same.

Modelling the Penrhyn must be flavour of the month, Accucraft have just announced a large Quarry Hunslet in 7/8ths" scale (OK, it's not 16mm scale but it will be pretty chunky!). More here QUARRY HUNSLET Live Steam 0-4-0ST in 7/8ths Scale | Accucraft UK Ltd - pretty fast work with the photos, Hugh Napier only steamed again last week! The 16mm Assn. Penrhyn book is very well produced, I must say.

    Good morning Penrhynman,

Having been fortunate enough to see a copy at the weekend, and being a PQR member I would be very interested in the details if possible.

Some of the photos are superb in showing the general area around the Quarry as well as the loco's.

    Many thanks,

    Richard.

Details will be in the next PQRS journal, Y Llechen/The Slate, due out in a couple of weeks. The cover price is £8.50 - yes, I know it can't be bought generally but that is an indication of a selling price if it was and is based on advice from a number of booksellers.

It is on sale to PQRS members at £6.50 plus £1 UK P&P.

Yes, there are a number of superb photos in the book, most not previously published and more than any other book on the Penrhyn Quarry Railway.

Anyone want to join to get hold of a copy? See "Join Us" at Penrhyn Quarry Railway

In a very weak moment I ordered a copy, not having seen the note about Wikipedia. It's not worth 30p. Avoid like the proverbial.

Just to satisfy my curiosity - has it indeed turned out to be the Wikipedia article?

Yes, it's a collection of Wikipedia articles about a number of NG railways in Wales. If seen in a book shop, it would not be bought. Just as frustrating is the printed links to other sources but the hyperlinks don't work on paper (no surprise there).

    Learn from my expensive mistake.

    Hello,

Could any of the folk who have this new book please let me know if there are any locomotive drawings in it? Notably 'Ogwyn', 'Glyder' or Marchlyn. Or any people who may know where I could obtain some drawings of these locomotives? I am assuming they will be in Part 2 of the books by Bernard Rockett.

    Regards,

    Ben

I can confirm that the Modeller's Guide does not contain any drawings of the locomotives you mention. It focusses on inspiration for modellers by means of information and plans with over 130 photos of the railway when running.

Bernard Rockett is working on part 2 of his Penrhyn book and it is planned to include the loco drawings you seek. The planned publication day is the National Garden Railway Show in Peterborough on 27th April next year. It will also be available from the Penrhyn Quarry Railway Society's shop at the cover price plus worldwide postage at cost.

    Hello,

Does anyone know if Bernard Rockett's PQR locomotive drawings book two is likely to be released at the Garden Railway festival next week?

    Cheers,

Yes it is being released there, cover price £12.95. The Penrhyn Quarry Railway Society will have large stocks for sale on their stand (number 20). Until stocks last, they will be doing a deal if you buy volume 1 and volume 2 together.

The Penrhyn Quarry Railway Society will certainly be selling it on line and posting it worldwide at cost. Details available soon. Profits will go to the rebuilding of the railway.
