Could anybody advise as to what rolling stock is still lying about on the national network, brakevans were dealt with on earlier thread. A couple of friends were looking to purchase and restore a couple of wagons but got nowhere with their local railways, yes these railways have plenty that need attention but they felt if they were putting their hard earned cash into something, they wanted wanted to own them and make sure they were looked after.
There must be quite a few wagons especially, still laying around in various overgrown sidings.

I'm sure if they wanted to take on rolling stock already on their local railways, they could either join the C+W departments to gain "hands-on" experience, or approach owners of the stock with the aim of restoration and purchase. This would also save on the other associated costs of paperwork and transport, if for example...the wagon came from a site on NR metals.

The impression given was that they had tried that approach and were not getting the response they expected so were more interested now in persuing their own course.

Plenty of vans (and some brake vans) and other wooden bodied vans, ferry vans etc at the ford plant in Dagenham, suspect some are quite old, but some are rotten too.
Not sure what your into, but I dont see too many 1970s/80s freight stock preserved.

There are some MGR coal hoppers and one of the last MKA "Limpet" open wagons at Newport East Usk Yard. The "Limpet" is interesting as it was rebuilt from a tank wagon chassis.

The Tope wagon reported on UKRail at Ince Moss is the only example left, so would also make an interesting item to save.

Also of note around Southall sidings there's rows of National Power liveried hoppers, and at Ealing there's Tarmac HGAs ? (i'm not a wagon expert) in the sidings.

TPO's in Tyne Yard. Various vans, incl. some steam era types in Peterborough. One very aged (1930's?) 4 wheel tank wagon in Doncaster Belmont.

Thanks for the responses, please keep them coming.
I found pictures of a couple of wagons half in a river on flickr, no idea where and a lowmac at Tavistock in a pretty sorry state. If if they find something they want finding who owns it and getting it moved will be huge stumbling blocks.

That's at Tavistock Junction (outskirts of Plymouth) rather than Tavistock; off the end of one of the roads in the yard.

There much coaching stock around? Or owned by companies, I would think some lines might like some Mk. 2s.....

Sorry to bring the thread back from the dead, but this morning I passed Doncaster Belmont Yard, and saw what looked to be a 12 ton Esso / Shell 4 wheel tank wagon, faded and rusty, but parked on a siding at the Doncaster end of the yard.

Although faded and rusty, it was clearly showing Esso shell branding in black.
Not knowing too much about wagons, I would have thought to have survived in that yard for so long and so in view that it would have been scrapped or preserved long ago.
Anyone know any more about it ?

Probably in use as a depot fuel tank.
You might find out more on this site especially if you have the wagon number.

    This looks like the one
Looks pretty much same condition as the photograph

How long would it be since that wagon (unfitted) was actually used in revenue service ?
I did also notice that the V2 Tender at the scrapyard just outside doncaster (Sheffield line) has finally gone (it's been there by the line side all my life).. was it scrapped or just moved on ?

5944, Ploughman, thanks for your help !!, made my day to Sheffield more interesting yesterday.

One of the comments from 2003 says "This wagon is used to store human waste as there are no services (running water for the sinks and toilets etc) in the shunt cabin at Belmont. The wagon is emptied every so often into a road vehicle." When it gets preserved, who's up for repainting the inside of the tank then? :scared:

There is a well known Mark 1, known as the turd mobile, as an occupant used the carriage as a toilet for some months... It is now in use daily at a preserved railway. Those who knew it's history immediately prior to preservation generally avoided riding in it.

How many Mk 1 passenger vehicles are left on the network now now? (ignoring those in use on steam specials and dpartmentals)
