And, if it is riveted, will it be a traditional Manning flat plate and angle boiler, as I think it presently carries, or a conventional flanged one?

Also very nice to see "LADY ARMAGHDALE" fully restored as such, at SVR. MUCH nicer than a "THOMAS" look-alike!!

I emailed them about whether Askham Hall had arrived, their reply, Askham Hall, I don't know, we are about to get a steam navvy that is going to take a lot of time and attention to renovate. Are you wanting to help renovate Askham Hall? Our locos are narrow gauge and there are projects ready to renovate them.
I think Haig Colliery Museum was asking for a good home for Askham Hall, presumably because, having secured a heritage grant(?) of some sort , they are to develop the site and give it a new name, so I assume Askham Hall was in the way, any clarification on this would be welcome. Ta.

Havent been on here for a while to update our progress with little 'Victory' 2199, so picture below shows the new front tubeplate trail fitted in Mervyn Mayes workshop last friday, also the barrell section is to be welded shortly. The chassis meanwhile has now got all the motion and valve gear up. The cab and bunkers are being repaired or replaced were required.

12" barclays dont have separate smokebox.(well ive never seen one?)

Exactly what I thought, but IIRC the smokebox was a continuation of the barrel. Simple but difficult to repair unless as you say you weld a new box on. Ah the wonders of modern technology. I wonder how it would have been repaired before welding?
I take it that the firebox end is OK.

Well it is now, we have fitted 14 new copper side stays and a complete set of new crown stays and hanging stays(bar stays with fitted pins either end on the firebox crown to handle the extra movement). Picture below shows under repair earlier in the year.

As for barclays way of repairing smokeboxs before welding, would be a complete new front barrell section fitted I would have thought? However Victory has a front barrell which is welded and riveted from 1945 so from the war a welded section could have been done I would have thought? But I surpose someone on here would know.

There has been some further progress with Victory's Boiler as shown in photo. ND test done on welding and now just the front tubeplate to be finished next week and home following week complete with new tubes.

Not had any updates in this thread for a while, so thought I would post something.

Th owner and myself have carried out a little more work on Manning Wardle 1795. The rear buffers are finished and the front is nearly done. Drawings for the new cab are almost finished and the material will be ordered soon ready for construction. Work is needed on the tank before attention is turned to the boiler.

Updates and photos can be found at: www.manning-wardle.moonfruit.com

We are always looking for more photos of the loco, so if anyone knows of any, please contact us.

    Bagnall 2746 at Wirksworth.

The loco had a quick cosmetic repaint and went on display at Christmas. The new chimney and blastpipe castings have arrived and the last of the brasswork has been stripped off and put into store.

A little known restoration is that of Peckett 1936 at Chatham Dockyard. This loco has been restored to working order by its owner and helpers and started tests and runing in during October. It was previously at the South Wales Public Wharf and Transit Company, Penarth and is an M7 class. Well done to all concerned.

Just a quick up-date on Manning 1762 Dolobran. A new front section of footplating, complete with the cover, which hides the top of the cylinder covers and buts up to the smokebox front has been manufactured and fitted. The new sandboxes have been trial fitted to the fotplating, along with the re-furbished sand valve bodies. We are in the process of manufacturing new sand valve spindles and having new 'butterflies cast for the valves. Once we can assemble the sand valve as complete units, we shall be making a start on manufacturing new linkages and rodding for the sanding control.

Head Wrightson 0-4-0VBT 'Coffeepot' Betchworth No. 1 is due to arrive at Tanfield on Friday ready for it's role in our big freight event on 19/20 February. Renishaw Ironworks No. 6, Sir Cecil A. Cochrane, National Coal Board No. 49 and of course No. 3 Twizell are all due to be in action that weekend too.

This thread has gone very quiet recently so thought I would add a couple of items about newly restored locos.

At Embsay RSH 7086 'Norman' hauled its first passenger train in preservation on February 13th and apparently acquitted itself well. The loco is on loan from Southern Locomotives for the year.

Also I notice that Peak Rail are getting HE3883 which was Coal Products No 6 at Glasshoughton Coking Plant. This engine has been restored at the Statfold Barn Railway by the Hunslet Engine Company. It is advertised to run on the Peak Railway website at easter along with their resident austerity which is in psedo BR livery, see the Peak Rail website for details. http://www.peakrail.co.uk/EasterSteamDieselWeekend.html

HE3883 was the loco used in trials on BR for the Hunslet underfeed system although this equipment has been removed in its restoration.
