To enable to the train to run into and out of Llandudno easily on the out and return journeys, and it made the shunting at Holyhead easier as well.

Shunting at Holyhead yes, reversing out of Llandudno, not possible. You cannot set back that distance with passengers aboard.

Good point but what was the trip into Llandudno all about. On the day they could not guarantee a return there and were cautionning people who wanted to get off. Added not much to the day.

On the NWCE that I worked on from Liverpool, the last one, I would estimate that about 40 people got off at Llandudno, the pick up later in the day was never in doubt, which particular trip are you referring too.

Did the first one. A party wanted to get off and were told the train may not make it back inot Llandudno so mobile numbers were exchanged so that the people had a chance of catching a local to the Junction.

This one seems to have got to Stirling without incident and without assistance. The timings were changed last night because the water stop at Abington was deemed to short. It was raining on Beattock apparently and the speed at the summit was recorded at 31MPH.At least it got there.

31mph at the summit probably doesn't do justice to the climb which was easily the best I've seen in recent years despite the challenging conditions. Well worth a soaking.

Came through Penrith about 5 minutes late (thanks to some sort of lineside equipment problem I understand) behind a Transpennine Express service. Going very well indeed and surprising quite a few who were waiting for the next Pendolino service south. I would agree that 31 mph at Beattock Summit is an excellent performance.

46 mph on the return run and 60 over Shap southbound - almost twice the speed of the diseasal on the way up. Top speed on the day of 81 mph just north of Lockerbie. Great Day!

No chance. I'm not a big fan of any of the locations around Renstrie and I wouldn't have missed that sight and sound for anything. I managed some sun later on away from the wires, but it really didn't compare to the Duchess at full cry on the 1-in-75. sgthompson's great vid gives a good impression of what it was like, but the sound at the trackside was something else.

Just got back in from a great day out, there was some really brisk running northbound and has already been said the climb of Beattock was classic. I did have my video camera peering through the rain and will process and post the result tomorrow. A little time was lost with the water stops on the return, but with Bill in charge I understand that the time from Carlisle to Shap summit was the best ever with the load.
What needs to be mentioned is the fact that on Friday morning at Carnforth, during the routine inspection it was found that there was a broken driving wheel spring. A spare had to be brought from Ripley and the fitting was finished at about 4am Saturday.

Big thanks to all concerned for today, PRCL Trust, WCRC and NR. The latter in particular for maintaining a path for this tour when East Coast Mainline services were working through Carlisle and into Scotland.

What a fantastic day. Thanks to all concerned for a day that we wont be forgetting in a long while. Loco in superb form handled by some great crews. The return run made even more special with no support coach behind tender.

If it has turned out to be bills last driving turn on wcml (believe hes doing london pmr trip), he certainly did it in style, on the engine he has been associated with so much especially on that route. Very fitting indeed!!

What a shame we will soon be losing 6233 off mainline for overhaul, after todays trip you would have thought she was straight out of the box. A great credit to PRCLT.

Sounds like a grand day out, so much better than Thursday. If Bill was on his last run on the WCML who is taking the old girl out of Euston next week, I felt sure Bill would have a hand in it somewhere?
