NATIONAL PRESERVATION FORUM SPECIAL Saturday 13th November 2010

The special will depart from Froghall station at 19:15. The train will be 12 coaches (approx 450 ton train!) and hauled by 8F No. 48624 and banked by 5MT No. 42968 for the run up the 8 miles of 1 in 40 - 1 in 59 gradients to Cauldon Lowe.

The train will run non stop from Froghall - Cauldon and the same from Cauldon - Froghall. The train will arrive back at Froghall at 21:12.

There will be a train leaving Froghall at 21:30 to allow passengers to travel back to Cheddleton if that is where they started their day from.

There will be food and drink available at Froghall until the special leaves at 19:15, there will also be plenty of beer and nibbles on the train.

    The prices for the special are;

£10 on the night for the special only
£5 extra if you have a day rover ticket.
Free if you have a weekend rover ticket.

Tickets will be available via an online ordering system that is due to be launched on the 1st September 2010 and will also be available on the day. I will advise of the link to this website once it is available.

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

    Thanks Chris
I have glanced at a few time table proposals and sadly ( or not ) for the loco crews it may well mean a standing start form Leekbrook Junction

    Banking will be needed .....?

    Up a 1 in 40 on a tight curve
It then straigthens out still climbing with one more curve it then goes over a magnificent stone skew bridge crossing over the A 520 Leek to Stone road

This bridge is pictured on the CVR website news section

I have stood on this bridge a few times it is the one place that gives you a sense of the severeness of the gradiant as you can look down the A520 and see the road bridge that crosses the current CVR formation you then realise how much the line has climbed in such a short space

This whole 7.5 mile extension is the opposite to the CVR formation of today

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

Can someone tell me? Will this new section be open from the Novemeber 2010 re-opening date on normal services from then on? or will it be just be for special dates (gala's etc).
If it is open with the rest of the line from then on, everything will be put under a much bigger demand, will the railways facilities cope?
Dont get me wrong, I do want all to go well and will be there to enjoy in due course. Just sounds like one hell of a challenge!

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

MCR / CVR is under discussion here http://railways.national-preservation.com/showthread.php/20904-Moorlands-and-City-Railway but to answer your question simply, the Cauldon Lowe branch will only be used by the CVR for special events as there is no immediate plans for a station at Cauldon. As for facilities, be patient what has been announced is only the tip of the iceberg.

Back to the gala, banking will be occuring up the bank due there not being enough time to install a runround loop at Cauldon Lowe for various reasons. This will mean a standing start from Leekbrook, except for the NatPres special which will be non-stop from Froghall. Further details will hopefully be released at the beginning of September.

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

The CVR and MCR are delighted to confirm that the LNER Beavertail Observation Car No. 1719E will be visiting the line for the duration of the event.

Special thanks go to Railway Vehicle Preservations Limited and the Great Central Railway for making the visit possible.

We should hopefully be in a position to announce the third visiting engine that will visit the railway for the gala.

    Regards

    Chris

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

Sounds great... but considering that the diesel gala's been overtaken by the need to have two consecutive steam weekends, how about doing a similar special for the diesel boys with say the 37 on load 12, with the 25/33 banking? Would inspire me to come up for the second weekend as otherwise I can see the left over steamers from the weekend previous gobbling 7/10ths of the turns....

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

The second visiting engine for the gala can now be confirmed as being Bullied Pacfic No.34028 Eddystone. Special thanks to Southern Locomotives Limited and the Swanage Railway for making this possible.

With good news there is bad news, 42968 will no longer be visiting due to a long list of repairs that are need to the loco. A suitable replacement should be announced early next week.

    The loco line up is now;

    71000 Duke of Gloucester
    34028 Eddystone
    8F No. 48624
    Large Praire No. 5199
    TBA

Re: Churnet Valley Railway& Moorland & City Railways Cauldon Lowe Branch re-opening G

I hope each of the diesels gets the chance to be on the front, on their own, up to Cauldon Lowe. I fear there may not be enough paths for that though - not if the steam is also going up there.
