Does anyone know the current status of 5025 in her overhaul and about how much longer till 5025 returns to service on the strathspey railway? Will 5025 be rebuilt to mainline standards? What about paint? I hope they keep 5025 in LMS livery. I believe 5025 is the only Black 5 in LMS that is a working engine. Sorry, I don't count 5000, its been yrs since it ran and its in the NRM.

I think you'll find that 5337 will be running in LMS livery in a few weeks time.

I think 5337 might return in plain BR livery for the first few weeks.-then again if you believe what you read elsewhere it might return in Regional Railways livery

    NOPE, I meant 5025.
Sorry, grandfather rights prevail, all original is better ! No 4's here ! Is that a Found On Road Dead or Driver Returns On Foot, I see in that picture, I feel vvvery sorrrry for you ! LOL All in good fun TbirdFrank ! That actually was a decent car they brought back if you like Detroit 50's stuff.

As to my dislike for BR livery, I grew up in the late 70's and 80's, when you guys had most of the engines painted in the Pre-Grouping or Big Four liveries and I grew up on stories from guys who worked for the Pre-Grouping Companies and the LMS, GWR, LNER, etc. Mostly all of those chaps have gone west, poor fellows, but I'll remember them and their stories for the rest of my life. They didn't talk much about BR, seemed to hate it for all the restrictions on steam and for getting rid of it in the first place.

    Keep Steam Up,
    EJ

The next issue of Heritage Railway out in September is due to have an article about 5025 in it.

At last someone else who likes pre-group/group liveries. Being brought up on the Bluebell I've always liked a riot of colour! Thats not to say Dark Green doesn't look right on the right engines of course! The Blackdog does nothing for me... but at least its given the BR brigade what they wanted for the time being. I think Bluebells policy is about right, paint the loco in an earlier livery first then change to BR later once it looks a bit tired. Industrials often have colourful liveries hence I like them too. Time to head for the nuclear shelter methinks:D

Leave space for me too. The sooner we get over the current "paint everything BR livery" syndrome, the better the preservation scene will be. Variety is the spice of life, so while it is nice for locos to change livery from time to time, it would be nice if everything wasn't in the same livery. Bring on the days when there are a number of Black Fives working and carrying a variety of LMS and BR liveries.

Having grown up with 5025 in LMS black I'm looking forward to seeing her come back in that livery, though I would like to see her in BR black as she was one of the last 5's left at Carnforth at the end of steam (5025 was a standby engine for the 1T57 incase one of the other engines failed).

I'm remember suggesting once that 828 ought to be painted into LMS black as 17566 to show off her LMS history and that idea got a very bad reception. Why don't we like acknowledging the history of important companies like the LMS or the Southern?

I agree especially with the paint everything BR liviery for example the situation after 6233 was painted LMS Black which is authentic but most those of the BR everything got upset. I've nothing against BR livieries but its nice when a loco comes out in a pre BR liviery especially as 5025 and 5000 are the only Black 5's in LMS black and both aren't in steam yet so if 5337 does come out in LMS Black it'll be a breath of fresh air.

Save room for me in the shelter please ! I am too young to remember steam in regular use, but for the life of me I cannot get my head around the constant desire to see locos in the liveries/conditions in which they ended their final days, when neglect and abuse were rife....why do they want to see a loco in pretty much the state it went into the scrapyard ?
Lets turn the tide and start pushing for more big 4 and even better, more pre grouping liveries ! get the polish out and make 'em shine....

Thumbs up from me for the LMS livery....

45025 was very far from a scrapyard candidate at the end, as she had been stored almost ex-works prior to transfer to Carnforth, and her exploits as 45025 on the Belfast Boat Train along with the likes of 45342, 45134 and others.

That is her heritage, and whilst she is at least saved it is a great shame that she will not be a mainline candidate again, and that the sound of her purring along at sixty odd remains a distant memory, unlike the other little black machine, which has been purring around the highlands very recently pacing another nice black liveried loco making a long awaited return to its home ground :car:

I see nothing wrong with BR liveries. But in the last decade or so now their use has become overkill. I understand the remaining older end did not see the big four and want to relive their younger days. Besides that its a fitting memory to BR which is now gone sadly. With privatization everything has been ruined, just look at the silly modern stations, computerized signals (gone forever are the semaphores and Boxes) not to mention the motive power changes etc. The old beauty of the railways is disappearing fast. (Mainline that is) I know there has been some positives but not that many. Remember the days of a BR steam special and the ticket fare was only 1 pound extra? For myself the BR livery has been used to death, so much so its become boring. There at least was a large mix up of liveries in the past. It will be nice to see 5025 in steam again soon. I agree its ashame we won't see it on the mainline, but running is better than not.

There hasn't been a post in this thread for 3 years or so. Looking at Strathspeys website I can't discover the status of this fine machine. Of particular interest to me as she was a Lancaster Green Ayre engine before final allocation to Carnforth after 10j closed.

An update on her current status would be much appreciated :)

Boiler and tender top at Rileys, the latter as a template for fabrication of a new one. Reported on the Patriot project thread that she's also having a new cylinder(s)
