Just need to raise 9,000,000 squids to build Yeo, Exe and Taw. Shall we arrange a bake-sale?

    Nine million? Try £900,000.

Lyd was £350K, but building three together should save a bit of cash.

Nooo. Keep the cakes coming so we can rebuild Welsh Pony and replicas of an original small England as delivered in 1863 (Mountaineer?) and a new, improved Moel Tryfan.

Oh, and another ten carriages for the WHR.

The ALCo is going on holiday to the SVR next year, I believe it is to go in the engine house to replace PRINCE.

What is so impressive is that 'Lyd' seems to be working very well 'out of the box'. I would be most interested to see a snag list. It would give us an insight into the work needed to prepare the loco for service.

She is doing a stunning job, very impressed, very very chuffed...good news :D

And apparently Lew is in Collection X, so might see double heading sooner or alter :p

Oh, and tell the FR guys that Manning Wardles are only supposed to pull 4 coaches, thats it! Those are the rules....:D

It's not a Manning Wardle, it's a Boston Lodge, Ffestiniog Railway engine.

I've heared there is something of an issue with not getting the fire hot enough.

Havent there been cases of this before?

Seem to remember an engine afflicted by this not so long back and it was solved by converting it to coal? (which it should have been in the first place lol :D )

I've been told that some engines such as the mainline Hunslets go better on Oil because it is easy to get a much hotter fire, I believe one potential cause for concern is the burner which differs from the usual laidalei-drew (or however it is spelt), types that are fitted in our other engines.

I hope this is something which can be sorted relatively easily as the big question mark with this project was always the actual haulage ability of the L&B design. Lyd is, of course, superheated with 25% higher boiler pressure and has, correct me if I am wrong, other modifications to the boiler proportions.

Interestingly, when Hunslets built the first Sierra Leone 2-6-2 tanks they had obviously been keeping a close eye on what was going on next door at Mannings. Drive was onto the third coupled axle, producing a much more compact chassis and the valve gear was different. There was a similarly (dare I say) effete looking boiler also utilising a raised round top firebox. Whether or not Sierra Leone complained about the ability to boil water I don't know but along came the "big boiler" type, much better looking and whose limitation on performance was solely one of available adhesive weight.

Anyway, good fortune to Boston Lodge in Lyd's shakedown period and I hope you prove my doubts unfounded!

Provided she doesn't fall apart in Beddgelert Forest beforehand..... Lyd will be in steam at least 3 days at Launceston in September. Further info on the LSR website - keep an eye on it for any further steaming dates and any timetable changes.

Lyd we learn will have two cab roof profiles: a lower one for the FR loading gauge, and one like the original for elsewhere. In the videos already published online, which profile is she carrying? What/where exactly is the difference between the two, and how is the switch between them managed (e.g. different roof, different cab sides)?

    Martin,

The pictures seen so far show the FR profile. http://www.ffestiniograilway.co.uk/lydproject.htm shows the difference in profiles quite nicely (compare the first photo of LYD with the painting of LEW just below it.)

The change is to be effected by sections that fit to the permanent, fixed roof. I'm not sure if they are removable or just fold down when used in "FR" mode. The difference is only a matter of a few inches, and only at the extreme sides of the roof.
