I didn't listen to the iplayer piece mentioned above, so I wonder if Steve can provide an update--if it is info yet for the public domain--about the likelyhood of getting the £300k from NYCC?
At what point does the inflo of funds justify actually ordering the new steelwork? Time presses on.

'Beancounter' is nearer the font of financial knowledge on this than me and no doubt he will post a response when he reads your query. I think that the NYCC grant is still in the balance, dependent on a larger government funding package to them. Preliminary enabling works are presently ongoing and I believe that the steelwork has been ordered.

Any further news from the NYMR as to how the Appeal is progressing?

The NYMR "Bridge and Wheels" website now shows that £200,000 has been raised. No doubt they have their fingers crossed in respect of the North Yorkshire County Council pledge.

Fund now at £610,000.00, which is brilliant news

    Full press release here;

Two substantial grants have been announced in support of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s “Bridge & Wheels” Appeal.

A grant of £300,000 has been awarded by North Yorkshire County Council and a grant of £100,000 has been awarded from the LEADER programme, designed to help rural communities regenerate.

This substantial support, combined with the funds already raised by the Moors Railway, moves the Appeal total to £610,000.

The Railway’s efforts to raise £650,000 by the year end in order to cover the cost of replacing a vital bridge, between Goathland and Grosmont, have moved a big step forward.
County Councillor John Fort, North Yorkshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways and Transportation, said that the authority had been pleased to lend their support to such an important transport-related scheme.

He said “When we were made aware of the condition of Bridge 30, between Goathland and Grosmont, we felt we had to do something. The council recognises the significant value of this heritage steam railway both as an important transport artery running through the National Park, linking moors and coast, and as a significant contributor to the local tourism economy.

By supporting the renewal of this vital piece of transport infrastructure, it will make all the difference and will help to safeguard the long term future of the Railway.”

Mike Horrocks, North York Moors Coast and Hills LEADER Programme Manager, said: “This is by far the largest grant that LEADER has awarded in the Moors, Coast and Hills area. It is a substantial sum for a substantial project. In agreeing to support the Moors Railway, the local communities will benefit in a number of ways. Firstly, by safeguarding the future of the Railway, we continue to support a number of communities along the line. Secondly, a small portion of the grant will be used to further develop projects that will bring even more tourists into the area. These are projects that will bring the communities together, to make even more of what they have to offer.”

Murray Brown, Chairman of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust, said that the support was tremendous. He said “This is brilliant news. Everyone is pulling together. We are very close to our year-end goal and are hoping that those who have supported us through the year will help to give one last push to meet our £650,000 target.”

The Railway is hosting a Fundraising Ball this Saturday at the National Railway Museum in York.

Amongst the guests will be the Appeal Patron, Pete Waterman.

Thats excellent news, sighs of relief all round!

Might there even be a bit available eventually for the Standard 4 overhaul?

Congratulations to all concerned. Get on with the job now! And PLEASE can we see some images of the bridge being fabricated, wherever that maybe!

This excellent news leaves us just short of the total cost of this winter's essential work on Bridge 30. The final parts of the work - realigning and relaying track on the northern approach and water-proofing the two neighbouring bridges this passes over - will have to be left until next winter, partly due to money but mainly due to available time. (This deferred work comes to a 6 figure sum!)

The beams for Bridge 30 are currently being completed in Chepstow by Mabey Bridge and then will move by road to A V Dawsons at Middlesbrough Goods. They will then be moved down the Esk Valley line by rail by DB Schenker at the start of January. They will be moved with the Volker Rail crane for the main lift of old beams out and new beams in during January. Many thanks to all those involved - we have had considerable assistance and some very good prices!

There is some money which has been specifically received for 80135. Work is about to start on forming the new inner firebox but the speed with which this work can progress is in part dependent on more funds being raised.

The other piece of good news is that the NYMR was announced on Wednesday night as joint winner of the Attraction of the year (over 50,000 visitors) at the Yorkshire Moors and Coast 2009 Tourism Award. The joint winner was Eden Camp just down the road! Quite a few of the winners in other categories were from along the NYMR, including Viv and Vernon Smith of the Whitby Steam Bus, who were named "Unsung Heros" at the ceremony.

The final figures are just about in for the Fund Raising Ball at the NRM on 28th November and we have raised approximately £13,500 from the event - well done all concerned.

Unfortunately, the gap between what has to be spent this winter and what we have raised has increased. This is due to having to change the manufacturer for the concrete deck units of the new Bridge and an allowance for additional costs in relation to work on the Bridge abutments.

This means that around £700,000 will need spending this winter, with £100,000 of associated track work and water proofing of neighbouring bridges planned for next winter. The Appeal and Grants currently stand at about £635,000, so further contributions would be gratefuly received!

Steven: Has anything been organised to record images of the work as it takes place?

Are any images of progress likely to appear on any official website, or maybe someones photopic type site?

I appreciate it assumes someone connected with the day to day work carries a digital camera, and has somewhere to upload said images?

Apart from anything else, it is a great opportunity to keep the project in the "public eye".

I am sure that there will be a record of the work taken - I suspect the key bits will appear on NYMR TV and the engineers will be taking pictures as a record of the work done.

I am not sure about plans to keep thr websites up to date but will check.

The Bridge beams assembly (both beams are made up into the final "box" ready to ne lifted in) have now arrived at Middlesbrough Goods by road and been loaded on to DBS wagons ready for the rail transfer to Grosmont. Many thanks to A V Dawson for providing the facilities for this.

A comment from one NYMR Director/Station Master said - "big, isn't it"!

Funny you should ask that, 46118 - guess what I just signed on to post!

The beams for Bridge 30 were moved by road from Mabey Bridge at Chepstow to Middlesbrough and loaded on to DBS Schenker wagons by A V Dawson (many thanks to Dawsons for undertaking this task.) on 15th December.

The Volker Rail crane will join the loaded wagons and move from Middlesbrough to Grosmont on Monday morning.

If the upload works, there are 2 pictures attached. (I have another couple but they won't upload!)

The two showing the road transport and loaded wagons with Dawson's Class 08 are by Ken Short and the daylight photos of the loaded wagons by the DBS Loads Inspector Mick Golightly.

The photos aim to show the sheer size of the beams (approximately 90 feet long) and the fact that the "box" of the two beams was formed at Chepstow before transport.

The Railway across Bridge 30 is now closed to all movements ready for the intensive period of work to commence. The concrete decking sections have had to be obtained from an alternative supplier at increased cost, so contributions to the Bridges and Wheels Appeal are still gratefully received.

Many thanks. I see what you mean about the sheer length of this bridge! Most impressive. Goes without saying that the whole structure is within the lift capability of the Volker, I thought originally the beams had to go in one at a time due to lifting constraints, but maybe that was when plan A (NYMR cranes) was the option.

An obvious comment, but I guess that structure, virtually a finished bridge, has made serious inroads into the Appeal Fund monies.

    Thanks again.

Good to see some positive happenings with the Bridge Project. Let's hope the weather doesn't delay an already tight schedule.
By today's standards, that is a big load for rail traffic but it was once upon a time a run-of-the-mill affair. It's only a bogie bolster and a couple of runners. We used to get loads like that on occasion at Middleton in the early days when we handled freight traffic and we had long RSJ's for Claytons. Maybe not the weight but certainly the length. They would generally come on two single bolsters with a couple of runners between them. Good fun on the sharp curves!

Pesmo: I think what you see in those two images is what you get, a single-line bridge ready for the concrete decking sections to go on top, and then all the finishing bits like parapets and the like.
