Defining the main line as "railway owned by Network Rail", I think I could add the following:
    AB2183 / Wemyss No.15
    Victor
    RSH Nos. 56 & 63
    P1163 / Whitehead
    Dora
P2000? (not sure who actually owns the demonstration line at Barrow Hill?)

    as well as Portbury.

Therefore I'll go for Victor or Dora :D

I have now added the poll but with a slight problem! I didn't realise when I first started this thread that the poll options were restricted to 10 options and I have around 23 nominations...

I have decided to omit those that have returned to the mainline in the last couple of years and new build 60163 as we could have a seperate poll for best newcomer as others have suggested.

I'm sorry if I have left out your choice but decided to go with those that were most suggested but I am happy to remove a couple and replace them if I have added a couple that members are definately not happy about.

I shall now retire to the mods bunker with my tin hat :behindsofa:

BTW, my choice is 6233, I was at Railfest in 2004 and at the end of the first Saturday it started raining and my son and I were invited onto the footplate and I think I was hooked from that moment. Having travelled behind her last October on that stunning climb of Shap and seeing her storm out of Tebay towards the summit on numerous occasions she never fails to impress :cool1:

What about ................. Handbags at dawn.

Its a toss up between 76079, 34067 and 35028 for me. All are regular performers, 20 odd VSOE trips a year, they are probably the heaviest passengers trains on the network, stunning run to Worting Junction, flattened Upton Scudamore from a standing start in terrible conditions. 34067 and 76079, go anywhere do anything locomotives with a very good reliability and great performances, can you ask for more.

    6233 and 6201 get a honourable mention.

Sorry, I meant to put 4965 on there instead. I will change that one.

I put 4771 in there as there was a lot talk about another overhaul and was a very popular loco up to withdrawl in 2008.

I have had a look around the adminstrative tools for the thread and the only way I can change the poll entries is by removing the whole thread and put the posts back in a new thread then start a new poll. That would mean that all the previous votes would be lost.

As members have already submitted quite a few votes it is probably best to leave it as it is. It was just a bit of fun as I said when I started the thread.

Perhaps I should start a poll on my incompetance... :confused1:

4771 wasn't a mainline approved loco for the second half of the decade and had comparatively few mainline runs when it was.

Looking at the votes cast, it appears you can vote for more than one loco - is that correct?

Looks like 34067 will win this poll hands down. Just shows you how good a Bulleid pacific is on the main line and a big shame that there isn't a few more working on the main line.

Firstly, I should point out that 34067 should not be quite as far ahead as it is as, due to a misunderstanding (forum left logged in under my name), my vote was cast for 34067 when I would actually have voted for 45407.

Whilst I grudgingly admit that 34067 did an excellent job standing in for 5029 and 6201 on GB2 and has been a very reliable performer of late, it did not appear on the mainline until 2003 (and was not without its problems to start wth) and has been mainline confined to the south of England (which perhaps explains why it has done so well in this poll). 45407, on the other hand, has run on the mainline in every one of those 10 years (a feat only matched by 4965, I think) and has covered the length and breadth of the country ... Inverness, Penzance, Harwich, Aberystwyth ... including a foray, at very short notice, into the Southern Region to stand in for a certain "go anywhere" Bulleid Pacific which didn't fit on one line in its own region! And don't forget about the "Riley International Rescue" tag - one only has to look through the previous 10 years' pages on uksteam.info and see all the places where other locos are crossed out and replaced by 45407 to realise that this was well earned.

Sheff, yes, you can vote for more than one and Malc has summed up my second choice, not that I am biased or trying to sway the vote....... :argue:

Thanks for your choices so far... :first:

When do members want to end this poll ? :banplease:

How does Sunday the 3rd at around 9pm sound?

It was a tough decision for me, but in the end, had to go for 45407.

For me it was between 34067, 35028 and 45407. In the end I went for the maid of all work 45407 which is a superb machine.
