FR 115 (Lindal Hole)

I am sure most people are aware of the incident in 1892 when Furness Railway 0-6-0 No.115 fell down a colapsed mine working (the loco could not be recovered and was subsequently buried).

Sunken treasure?

Apparently the water table here is Eric Morecambe Bay and very Brackish; whatever's left is likely to be a lump of rust,but it would be interesting to run modern ultrasonics on it just to see. A job for someone with the equipment. Perhaps the new chairman of the NRM has contacts in the Army Bomb Disposal Corps?

 

How about nominating this for an episode of Time Team ..... might make a change from peering at bits of broken pottery that someone then announces when, how, who it was made by about 800 years ago (as if they really know!).

 

I think that the 10ft bit might be the sticking point!

Not necessarily - they did an episode looking for a disused and buried viaduct in Wales twhere they had to dig an enormous hole - and still only just reached it. I think that the fact that the loco is buried under an active railway might be more of an issue!

The is reputed to be an engine buried at Fen Bog on the NYMR which, if it is there, is probably much closer to the surface. Could there be a case for trying to get a preliminary survey organised to look for that?

 

They could have a dig under Otterspool Promenade on the Liverpool side of the the Mersey. There are reputed to be some contractor's locos dumped there when the contract was approaching completion in the 30's.

What about the loco in lake?

A few years ago in steam railway a load of caldron wagons where located in a lake near doncaster but they couldn't recover the steam loco at the time due to where the dam was placed. Whats happened about that then? Apparently the loco is the same loco as seaham harbour 18 - i think. Which still surives as beamish. Also what about the 8f's under the red sea?

 

I think that the rumoured loco in Fen Bog has already been disproved.
Need to check back about 5 years or more in Moorsline and other mags.

 

Or the ones in the Bristol Channel.....

 

Am told it was iron ore here of high grade 70% iron mines here were politically closed so people would work at Sellafield/Windscale/Calder hall/ the new power stations. This may interfere with any kind of equipment. It would be a nice project for those who are local. Anyone got a shovel?
