For reasons that are still known only to those actually involved, they ousted the goose that was supplying the golden eggs, and it’s all gone down hill since.

Scotsman is Scotsman. Tornado is, now, just a run of the mill steam loco.

Reading between the lines, the fact that 2253 is going out with a diesel does manle me think that the oil firing is not yet going to plan. The various photos showing a black exhaust seem to support this.
    2 =2 does make 5, doesn't it?;)

I saw her today in stabled outside the workshop in Grosmont and she seemed to be steaming quite well.

If it’s simply stabled I’m not sure how you could come to any conclusion on its ability to steam.

Well I haven't seen a post by him as yet, so I do wonder where it was - welcome though!

He ‘liked’ my post 10749. He’s not posted anything since November 2019.

Give him a chance, he's got about 500 pages of catchup to do first! :) (And that's to say nothing of the WSR and L&B threads...)

Well when we passed earlier on the service to Pickering she was lit up and steaming nicely.

When I visited the loco shed she was stabled and looking gleaming and ready to go.

I think he "liked" one of my posts on 76079 quite recently, so he's obviously still watching. I spoke to him a couple of months ago, and I would say that he's as dismayed at the current state of the NYMR as most of us long-timers seem to be, though. One piece of news I've been told today, though I haven't seen it reported anywhere yet, is the the Trust Board Chairman has resigned, and that a certain very influential signaller with legal leanings is likely to step down from the Trust Board as well this year. A last some good news!

You would know better than me, but I wonder if the diesel is there as a precaution whilst firemen are still being trained?

Plausible, they were quite happy sending it out unassisted on the diner last month as part of the trials. Shame there's no handy Grosmont-based internal diagram to allow it to do a couple of round trips per day for the crews to get used to it.

Yesterday the 9F worked the short set at 1055 and 1230 etc. The lunchtime Whitby departure was a 37 which swapped with the blue 37 at Grosmont. The train was well filled but the earlier internal working with the 9F wasn't at all. Surely the 9F would've been better swapping to the ex Whitby to give a greater number of passengers some steam haulage?

Perhaps (I don't know) it's an attempt to entice more people onto the lightly loaded 10.55.

I assume a lot who travelled to Whitby on the 9.20 would return on the mid-afternoon train. At least that had steam haulage but it doesn't seem to be prioritising customer expectations

I think you're right with the diesel being there as a precaution but I don't think its concern about the crews ability. My gut feeling is that getting it right is proving harder than expected. Only a gut feeling, though. I've nothing to substantiate that.

Will 2253 feature in this weekend's paraffin can fest as a guest in view of the conversion? LOL :D

Indeed, the 9f ran her scheduled services with a 4
Coach set and indeed was sparsely filled.

Rather interestingly the other services of the day were well loaded, including both the internal and external 37 sets. I would still say overall visitor numbers were moderately good for a Monday in early June.

Sent from my laptop using my fingers.

Currently on a reasonably well filled 13:30 from Grosmont, back ended by a 37.

Plenty of people out to see her including staff so clearly a huge draw. Loco crew seem vigilant about blast, external visual checks. The departure out of Grosmont was typically sluggish but so far no problems.

    Will keep everyone updated…
