Go Ahead for NNR Sheringham Crossing to go in this Winter

Discussion in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' started by SteveA, Dec 8, 2008.

Well, I say good luck to them. Better to have the upgrade than not have it. And I would not agree that Cromer/NNR is an extremity of the national system, in fact much nearer to many folks then, say, Minehead or Pickering? And BTW without the Norton upgrade, the WSR would not be able to receive the weekday trains it currently gets, let alone the recent Gala shuttles or the Bristols; current plans for more regular services to/from the branch; and future incoming specials.

I would guess that the completion of the turntable at Minehead will have a knock-on effect in seeing that the connection to the main line does see more use in the months and years ahead.
Good luck to the NNR, I agree, if they can get the connection then long term it must be better than not having it, not least because of how much it may cost in a few years.

Whilst it is a shame that it can't be done this year, I do hope that is goes ahead next year. I see it as the first step to improving the service on the North Norfolk coast. Perhaps in the future the chord could be relaid at Cromer, thus allowing longer main line specials direct access to the NNR. Perhaps a NYMR operation could be set up to take NNR trains to Cromer? All ideas, but all needing the occasional use crossing as the starting point.

    Regards,

    Dan

I think That was the plan a few years ago, NNR were going to buy Cromer High station site and do as suggested.

I do hope in the next 10-15 years the West Runton triangle is fully restored, 4 coaches on a train is not going to get many tour operators excited.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't there housing (or at least gardens of houses) on the Runton trackbed??

I don't think so, the bridge and all that are still there. However the Cromer High site has been heavily build on.

A dedicated page has been added to the NNR website about the Level Crossing project.

There are photographs and plans of the proposed crossing as well as information on the history of the project and progress so far.

The all important sponsor and donatation form is also available. Please, if you would like to help us finally reconnect the NNR to the National Network, donate today.

If you enjoyed That's Yer Lot, just imagine what we could bring in to future galas with a mainline connection!

    The URL is http://www.nnrailway.co.uk/crossing.htm.

Yes, Norfolk County Council have pledged £25,000 towards the crossing, providing the NNR can raise the rest of the money.

Looking at that pic and the fact Cromer station is off the picture it suggests the distance between the points and bufferstops is bigger than 4 coaches and top and tail, would i be right in thinking the problem is actually getting the train inside the signal at the end of the platform ?.

The problem is getting the train inside the signal, but the points are very close to the signal. Where you see the two tracks converge in the photo is not where the points are. The two tracks run as two parallel, single lines for another quarter or half a mile or so towards the town, beyond the edge of the photo, before reaching the crossovers and then the platforms immediately afterwards.

The appeal for the level crossing http://www.nnrailway.co.uk/news.htm, It's looking better by the minute. The proceeds from the raffle should help aswell.
I didn't get any raffle tickets in Joint line like I did last year so have sent off for some.
