Quite the machine 46115 seems to be, the climb of Grayrigg being the most impressive in my opinion, speed not dropping below 50MPH according to the GPS the guy in the opposite window had, Tebay was passed as near as makes no difference 75MPH, the slips and brief shower on the final mile or so brought the speed down more sharply than previously with the summit passed at around the 30MPH mark, southbound after an initial gentle start from Carlisle the Scot held a decent speed (probably 55+... GPS gone) all the way back to summit, otherwise easily master of it's task in the mid 70's on easier gradients.

I'll add my pics in the morning, including 6201 passing 46115 in plat 1 at Carlisle (who'd of thought that in 2009 ?).

With all due respect to the excellent videos ( especially given the horizontal rain on Shap ) they haven't captured the full effect of the roar from the exhaust. Shortly after being re-introduced to the main line a WCRC footplateman described 46115 as a "beast" and the roar from the exxhaust proves the Scot to be truly lion-hearted in the way that it takes on all challenges - successfully.

If the Crewe team can restre 6100 to the same standard then a "Battle of the Giants" might finally give the Scots the credit they truly deserve after being over-shadowed by the Stanier Pacifics for so long.

But this success reflects well not only on the footplate crew on the day but on the WCRC team that restored it to working order and now maintains it to the same high standards.

A grateful "Thank You" to all the WCRC team from at least one grateful linesider. =D> =D>

Dreadful conditions for trying to handle a steam loco. Reckon the driver did very well to keep it going at that speed over Shap.

    Superb stuff guys!!

Had a fantastic day yesterday,WHAT A BEAST! It is just about my favourite loco on the mainline and all credit has to go to the WCRC boys and David Smith for such an awesome loco! The roar was UNBELIEVABLE! I beleive Mcaib (?) was driving on the way up and Peter Walker on the way back but can't confirm that,no doubt someone can.

    Well done all! =D>

The roar at 50MPH on Grayrigg was quite unlike anything i've ever heard, like 5690 on steroids, i think LMS 3 cylinder loco's are somewhat underated in the noise department, more a continous wall of noise than a BANG BANG BANG gunshot of a Castle or similar, after seeing 6100 at Llangollen it's quite astonishing they are the same class.

Nice work Mark; must have been difficult to take that shot when moving along at 75mph! looking at the bridge parapets which are presumably level, you can really see the nature of the 1 in 75.

My video from yesterday - just of the return (the northbound shot will be locked away in a shameful box, never to be seen again by anyone ;)) at Penrith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg6T98uLoVQ

I've rarely seen a steam loco going like that before, what an amazing engine and credit to WCRC.

Cheers David, lovely vid!the bridge has been unaltered by me. it was much harder to edit than take in the first place though! It's my first proper edit of a photo so i don't think i have done too bad tbh, although i will take tips.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Well,i think that's probably got more to do with the fact that they/we don't care. Although someone, somewhere will have moaned about the stock! #-o

I think Fred that had the conditions been more favourable, then that full Scot roar would have been heard. I was upwind on Shap and because of the rain and wind was not using my most sesitive mic. I can assure you that the roar was there as I remember it from the 'good old days', I was just not able to record it.

The 3 cylinder symphony was certainly there ! The Scot gave me a 2 minute warning of her approach, sounded at first like a low flying jet ! I'm not sure how amateur videographer's might capture the music in those conditions though, any ideas anyone !!

Fear not as I too was there in the horizontal rain at Greenholme but at least on digital image it's a simple case of noting that "no that isn't noise / grain just the rain to add a little texture !". The main point I had in mind was that few videos were able to capture the full depth of the roar and the roaring wind did little to help.

Even on the southbound running which passed me at Docker about 10 minutes early ( having reached that point in about an hour ) the roar on the climb from Beckfoot was still evidence of a powerful machine finally let loose on the main line.

As one of the Statesman pool engines this summer, methinks that the S&C will certainly be the place to be !

Sometimes some of the best sound recordings are done in the worst of conditions, but the videographers were in a no win situation, west of the line would have been no good for sound as it was all being blown away but east of the line the horizontal exhaust would have probably obscured most of the loco, especially the going away shot.
