Would there be a business case for acquiring a second castle ? , At least a castle is more gauge friendly than a king, even short term as a source of spare parts for the one they have, whilst rebuilding it,

I think that LSL will be waiting to see what happens with 60010 rather than acquiring a stripped down 'Castle'

I think LSL have enough on their plate with keeping 61306, 34046, 70000 and 46100 running, with 6024, 5029 and 60532 soon. Plus 35022, 35027 and 4464 waiting in the wings.

Presumably by 60010 you’re referring to DoC?

I gather it has been neglected (again) in Canada. So if re-repatriation is under consideration then maybe a streak would more appealing to LSL & Saphos than a second Castle.
Both classes well represented in preservation, but the castles were a longer lived and much more widespread part of the railway scene.

It pains me to say it, but I think a new A4 would sell more bums on seats.

But surely, If the Canadians were to decide that DOC was now not wanted, they would have to offer it back to the NRM, before putting it out to other organisations, and would the Canadian government be able to in effect offer it on the open market, Getting back to 7027, I still believe the only way that the GWS can get out of this scenario has to either sell it, complete to another group, or to decide that 7027 will be restored as a working engine , to take the place of its working castle, when that ones boiler ticket expires, and to then decide on one large engine in steam policy every ten years, to hire out, and for use at didcot, so the engine that is overhauled can be rotated through out the collection,

"In mid 2018 the locomotive was taken out of the primary display and stored in a building where it has suffered damage in the past. The problem with the building being that it becomes very cold in winter and has a high humidity in spring which causes condensation and hence rust.
At the same time it became clear that the Canadian Railway Historical Association were undertaking a review its collection. Much of the collection is regarded as a liability – especially those like 60010 which still have hazardous asbestos lagging.
At this time the feeling that the locomotive (along with LBSCR A1 54 Waddon) would be disposed of developed."
There may be newer info in which case the owner of this site would be grateful.

Why? NRM never owned it, and I doubt they’d want it. It was a gift not a loan.

So in short, a secondary source with which no official statement from the museum has been made.

British wishful thinking as opposed based on any concrete facts.

Seems to me the fundamental problem is that it doesn't matter what organisation you look at, they all have higher priorities for their limited cash. So unless a billionaire who wants to get into steam engine ownership appears out of thin air...
It was dumb thinking from the 4709 group. All they had to do was wait a couple of years and the story could have been 'at least we can rescue something from the scrapman'.
