Anyone know why Braunton has stayed at Southall for some time and is only now heading home? I turned out to see it come past Headstone Lane and I'm trying to upload my video to YouTube for once instead of to my own domain as usual, but either the process is very slow or I'm doing something wrong.

Edit: I've uploaded it to http://mellish.uk/Videos/Braunton and service trains at Headstone Lane.m2ts anyway

Went over to Cross Gates to see 44932 returning from Hull to Carnforth today, after some filming there, and running with Southern Railway on the tender, perhaps Tangmere would have been a better engine? was also hoping to see it in Leeds station, but it was running 20+ minutes late it was sent straight through Leeds station instead of the 40 minute wait at Neville Hill

Nice shot! I was getting twitchy with that 331 approaching from Crossflatts... Thankfully it departed with enough time before 44932 trundled through, closely following the late running Skipton train!!!

1981/1982 when the last 4 SUB units were withdrawn.
Somewhere there will be details of ex 4SUB trailer coaches which survived in EPB units until the late 1980's.

Robin it is worth checking out the Bluebell thread where there is some knowledgeable discussion going on about this. As usual, Tom (@Jamessquared) is very interesting on this topic.

There was a discussion about that on the Bluebell Facebook group. The consensus was:
    • Last Southern region carriages in passenger service - December 1968 (CK 5761, now at Swanage); 1464, which was one of the three used for filming, last ran in passenger service in November 1968.
    • Bulleid carriages transferred to other regions seemed to have been gone by 1968 (Western region); April 1969 (Eastern region; that carriage is now preserved by the Vintage Carriage Trust); Scottish Region February 1970. (The Bluebell's 1482, another of the carriages sent to Hull, lasted on the Scottish Region until November 1969).
    • Some of the surviving carriages were formed into a weed killing train. There is a photo of one of those carriages, ex Brake Third S4035S in use in April 1982; which is the last confirmed movement of a Bulleid carriage in an operational train. That particular carriage appears to have survived at Horsham until 1988, after which it was sold to the NYMR (and presumably moved at least as far as place where it could be loaded onto a lorry at that time). It wasn't restored there and was subsequently sold to the Bluebell for spares; the underframe survives and the body was broken up with parts incorporated in other surviving Bulleid carriages. https://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/bulleid/4035.html
The four Bluebell Bulleid carriages should have made at least two return mainline trips (to Alton and to Brighton) in the last couple of years, but for various operational reasons neither move occurred, so the moves up north this week were almost certainly the first moves of such carriages on the mainline for 40 years.

As @Romsey notes, there were also Bulleid EMUs which lasted into the early 1980s.

Were they moved to Carnforth by rail or was road cheaper?
