Meanwhile, the Wagon Group enjoyed a Christmas meal out, and back on the wagons, Tim has undertaken some shunting...the rest of December is likely to be quiet on the wagon front due to various members having other commitments and travelling...

"It was a bit cold today, but Tim managed to get some shunting achieved.
BR Van B768248 has gone to Peterborough for repairs and it was also a good opportunity to test the new brake blocks on Brake Van B954024. Some engineering wagons were brought back and then some coaches were moved ready for the weekend Santa Specials.
Luckily Tim lit the stove, so it was toasty in the Brake Van."

Those of you who follow the Quorn Wagon & Wagon blog will have seen the recent appearances of the NVR WG Scarab trailer which Matt is making rapid progress on restoring - well, it's time to reveal the tractor unit.

Tim has recently acquired a Scammell Scarab tractor unit and its accompanying trailer. The tractor unit is ex-Cadburys, whereas the trailer is ex-BR. The trailer will remain on loan with the QW&W guys for a while for use with their recently acquired tractor unit while we undertake restoration of the tractor unit.

We are currently accumulating authentic (or replica where necessary) parts for the restoration, and it needs a fair amount of TLC covering bodywork, mechanics, engine and electrics!

    1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg
Eventually they will be completed in BR Crimson & Cream livery, with a Cadburys advert on the trailer as nod to the history of the tractor unit.

Great find - I've been fascinated by these since I played with my brother's Dinky Toy version as a child.

Sunday saw our first work session for 2023 (which means I probably ought to get the 2022 Q4 writeup finished and on the website!). Josh and I had a prior commitment in the morning, but made it across in time to help with clearing up and fitting the new tarp to the PalVan. It was also useful being able to tap Matt's expertise on Scammell related issues.

"Today was the first session of the Wagon Group after the Christmas break and it was all about housekeeping.
There was a good turnout, including a guest appearance from our friend Matt Baker from the Quorn Wagon and Wagon Group, so we decided to clear out B775702 ready for transformation into Fruit Van B875739. The van had been languishing full of old timber for years. Now cleared out we can see what needs doing and it’s clear that new wood will be required throughout.
Another job was to recover the Palvan to prevent damage prior to the new roof being fitted. The tarpaulin blew off in the winter winds, so another one is now in place."

    L-R:
"A big pile forming outside B775702"
"Close up of B775702…Tim is inside with Matt"
"Matt looking pleased with his work"
"Paul, Gareth and Jason getting framed"
"We found a NatWest Sign too"
"Rotten panels were removed as well"
"Good to see everyone after Christmas"
"The stripped van and tidy ground after clearing up"
"Stu putting on the new tarp" (Tim is actually in this photo - somewhere under the tarp!)
    "Stu with Matt helping"

Okay, who has got a wood burner at home?! :D Either that or you're going to have a good bonfire...

Thinking about wagons, is there any likelihood of acquiring a 'Presflo' in the future? To me they were synonymous with the 70s and 80s in Peterborough as they brought flyash to Fletton to fill in all the knottholes at the disused brickyards.

    Like the solar panel !
( be a bit less obtrusive on the ducket top perhaps, the wire probably not long enough)

There's a Presflo in the background of a few of those pictures. It's owned by Railworld, precisely for the reason you mentioned. I'll leave it to those in the wagon group to say whether they have any plans for it

    I couldn't possibly say, but we weren't cold ;)
Not only that, but it has been shown some love relatively recently when Tim repainted it for RailWorld (and discovered it still had ash in it!). Not that likely to be seen out and about in the rake though...

It's one of several 'features' fitted by the owner. The solar panel can easily be removed when running which is good from a photography perspective. Some of the internal additions however, whilst extremely practical, are less than sympathetic in their implementation (i.e. could be better integrated/hidden).

What does it do - provide internal lighting? Would it have been an oil lamp originally?

I believe it charges a battery used to power a mains inverter inside, there may be a lamp too, but I can't actually remember...

For a recreation of my secondary school days you'd need a rake of them: the NVR already has the perfect loco to haul said rake - 45 041. "Peaks" were quite common on flyash trains.

Peterborough Coal and Coke Company. The lower legend asks it to be returned to Woodstone [sic] Wharf - which is where it is :)

Recently the NVR Wagon Group commissioned Dapol to make some wagons for them in the livery of the "Peterboro' Coal Co. Ltd" but they were different - different company after all, one assumes. How about some in this livery, @big.stu ? ;)

You could put me down for six straight away...

Woodstone is the original name for this area, now known as Woodston. The railway is generally using the archaic spelling as seen on the wagon and various other goods related items (and the signal box at PNVR too).

    Never say never, BUT:

    a) We probably need to sell the rest of the current run first (we don't like to tie up too much of the wagon funds in model stock)

    and

    b) I vaguely recall that this livery is entirely fictitious, so the appeal of a model run may be somewhat limited...

See also: Whittlesea :) How to tell if someone has lived in that area for a REALLY long time: when they refer to the Hotpoint site as "BTH" - which it used to be.

It'd be a shame if it was as it looks very attractive.

Whilst we're on the subject of models - I believe one of the manufacturers is producing a model of the Esso tank wagon (no. 1914) at Wansford.
