Thanks for the time. Of those posted to date it is, the 13th fastest overall and the 5th fastest "pure steam" starting from Appleby.

Does anyone know what's going on with The Dalesman for this coming Thursday (6th)? Times are up for Carlisle to York , Carnforth to Hellifield etc, but the morning run from York to Carlisle is absent.

Oops, no it isn't, you are correct. I'm certain that they were showing last week when I looked. Carlisle arrival was showing 1411, if that helps.

I would be grateful if anyone travelling on tomorrow's Dalesman can record and then post a time for the climb from Ormside to the Aisgill summit sign. I am keeping a record of all posted times for the year. [Please see post #63 above for full details].

We are rapidly approaching the end of this year's planned steam haulage over the S&C and this could be YOUR last opportunity to "join in".

Thanks, in anticipation and enjoy. Remember, "Oswald needs YOUR time!"

Interesting to see observation coach 999506 in the formation of the Dalesman today. Appeared to be a party of passengers joining at Skipton.

Thanks David, yes it certainly was and luckily the rain stayed away from Helwith Bridge but lashed down for a while at Birkett before BIL arrived.

Looking at those excellent videos and at RTT that seems like a real battle yesterday. 115 mins from Settle Jn northbound and 135 mins coming back including an hour from Carlisle to Appleby. Any reports from the train?

Is there a speed restriction around Arcow Quarry? The video shows the train approaching slowly and then accelerating rapidly.

Wasn't there a prohibition at one time from having a Mark I at the end of a train? When was that relaxed? This train had not merely a Mark I but the observation coach with people facing the end window.

Is such late running on the northern fells not an endearing feature of the Merchant Navy class... :)

Good one! I was on the train in May behind 46115 when the arcow train was running. We were signalled away from Hellifield a few minutes after the quarry train, held at Settle Jn and very similar time up to Blea Moor. In October conditions I should think Taitlands was very slippery. I think there's a bit of history there long before the MN appeared!

If the arcow train is running, the path wants to be depart Hellifield no earlier than 1230 and at least have a bit of a run up past Settle.

Coming back from Carlisle, that's interesting, but on the face of it, good evidence for @Oswald T Wistle model of the effect of a 40mph sou'westerly.
