Thank you. That seems plausible. Do we know for sure?

It certainly has been in the past when running several trips with perhaps only a day between and away from base, and even with this last trip, was it from Leeds? much easier than having to find accommodation.

Sadly the vertical plume of black at the back of the train suggests otherwise!

I'm not sure of the total mileage on the Northern Belle but diesel assistance on the banks may be necessary to eek out the limited coal capacity of a Bulleid tender. With good coal it is around 200 miles so not a lot in reserve.

LMS = sensible fit-for-purpose coal capacity, as was, of course, Southern capacities. Actually it's modern equipment like OHLE and locos that are 'out of place' that present a whole new load of operational problems in 2022 - far more than whether you hang some additional motive power on the back!

I can’t see what difference OHLE makes, if a path can’t be found for a 75 mph steam loco then it doesn’t run.
The LMS and Southern were different railways, the latter generally having shorter distances to cover so didn’t need the same coal capacity leaving room for more water avoiding the need for water troughs.

The LMS/Southern difference was the point I was making. On the LMS a greater range was needed - hence the tenders and, of course, water troughs. As for OHLE, you can't load coal onto a tender under the wires so if the coal capacity of the chosen loco is insufficient for a trip and quite a lot of the chosen route has OHLE there is little alternative than to go for insurance.

It's tricky running any Bulleid from KGX to York, for example. Pathing is something entirely separate.

It has been done, though with difficulty. I have video from The Royal Scot at Newcastle on 1-12-1996, when they were passing bags of coal from the platform onto the footplate, then shovelling it into the tender.

I’m not sure that would be allowed now. It’s not permitted to use the fire irons or the pep pipe under the wires now

Just had a flashback to 2012 when 34067 Did a CME with consist of 12 unassisted. RYTC

The Northern Belle is a heavier train. That is a good point in and of itself.

Just noticed on the website that the Tribute to the Bournemouth Belle is no longer appearing in the Steam Journeys section, nor talks about having a steam locomotive hauling it. Guessing its going Diesel hauled this year?
